TN: Beze and Suchots

2017 Gérard Mugneret Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru (1/23/2021)
Decant and pour. Intoxicating nose of spice and herb garden with violets, black and purple fruit and bramble berry. Palate is weighty and full with deep black fruit and layered herbs and Vosne spice on a solid core of mineral driven acidity. A fun drink now, but this is built for significant bottle time. (93 pts.)

2014 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Chambertin-Clos de Bèze - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (1/23/2021)
Decanted. Dark ruby. Nose is a bit muted but slightly opened up to reveal cranberry and pencil lead. Palate is lighter than expected for a GC of this status but is pleasant with bright acidity, tart red berries and a somewhat brief finish. Delightful to drink but no one would confuse this with a top tier GC. Should develop with more time but doesn’t show the stuffing for the long haul. (90 pts.)

I am a big fan of Suchots…had a couple 2014 Drouhin Laroze wines that need a lot of time, lots of crunchy red fruits and high acid. Don’t think they’ll ever be generous fruit driven wines, not the style, but will age into something in a decade+.

14 DL Beze isn’t even close to ready and isn’t really offering much pleasure atm. I think this will end up being very good in 5-10 years, probably closer to 10.

15 and 17 drouhin Laroze have a lot more fruit.
