TN: 2013 Meyer-Näkel Neuenahrer Sonnenberg Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs

A complex, lovely nose with forest notes, wild berries, rhubarb, cola, spice and loamy herbal notes. It’s midweighted and sappy on the palate, with more forest berries, spice, moss, and cola notes. It’s deep and has an admirable level of finesse and cohesion with the sap and breadth beautifully balanced with its acidity. Quite long on the back end with more spice and a cooling herbal finish. This is drinking in the slot, and is a very impressive bottle of pinot. Full disclosure, I prefer a more red fruited expression of pinot, but this is outstanding in its mode. It’s hard not to like this very well made wine. I have minimal experience with German Spatburgunder, much of which has been subpar, but his is lovely and worth seeking out. Well done! (92 pts.)
