TN: 1997 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese

Opened one of the rieslings sent to me by the anonymous donor

  • 1997 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (1/22/2021)
Peach purée, orange peel, clover honey, papaya, lavender, and minty herbs. Scintillating acidity, this auslese is very fresh and creamy on the palate, leading to an everlasting finish of orange and tropical fruit notes. Wonderful juice! (95 pts.)

Great vintage in the Saar. Overlooked producer that while not top tier, still makes some delicious wines.

I’ve heard it said that since Annegret Reh-Gartner’s death in 2016, the wines are not up to the level they once. Any truth to this?

CT says I have an '85 of this. Anybody have any thoughts about what to expect from that?

I agree. I always thought they did a good job with the Scharzhofbeger wines in particular. Not surprisingly.

Small world, just picked up a few 2018s from Kesselstatt today, Kabinetts though.

Sounds like a fantastic flavor profile. Love when you get lavender with the orange and citrus.

Jealousy ensues.

I have heard nothing of the kind.
