Interesting. I've never really looked at those. I haven't had the pleasure of trying any older ones and my experiences with older BV in general has been mixed to 'meh'.

But I do eye the 90's stuff every week. [wink.gif]
Good to ignore them, then. cheesehead

I can think of many wines with very similar ratios of past and current bidding.

$90 still not too bad for 26+ year old wine in the grand scheme of things.
Thankfully, the low bidder has no need for any more wine 🤭

You have made my point, as the current bid is $310.
Uhm, 5 Trackers and no Bidders. It may end up selling, but...
Bidder tag is "delod".
This bidder was on at least 15 different wines I was looking at this week.

Same. I meant wines within the realm of formerly bargain basement old CA wines. Nearly all of them are getting pumped. Some more than others.

Looks like a single half bottle of Monte Bello from the most current release on WineBid this week. Opening price nearly double the futures price. Looks like MB is becoming flippable.

my strategy was always to buy vintages not labels. You could pick up aged bottles for pennies and 9/10 times they would be good.

Basically it’s so depends on what you’re looking for and how hard you’re going to work.

Last year I bought 62 bottles from WineBid, I’ve just over 30 left. Basically I find wines I either know and like or that I want to try. Then, if they make sense on my QPR formula, I bid. Most I’ve spent is right around $150/bottle all-in. Again, nothing exotic. And so far it’s working well.

I just happened to go to KL auction site and saw that the ‘16 Chappellet Signature - great QPR wine - is 2 for $250 right now with 10 minutes to go. That wine is readily available at my local wine shop for ~$70? It’s also available online for $72 at retail. Who is paying $125 + buyers premium ... and there’s 10 bids!

Lots of head-scratchers in that auction, especially on not-uncommon, easy to find Bordeaux. E.g. 2009 Lynch Bages for $365/bottle for a case, when individual bottles are widely available on Winesearcher for $200-250 a bottle, 2009 Troplong Mondot $291/bottle for a case, Winesearcher $180-200 per bottle, etc. etc.

In older Bordeaux too. 1986 Gruaud for over $400 a bottle when it is $250 or less on Winesearcher, 1985 Ducru Beaucaillou for $365 a bottle when it is widely available on Winesearcher for about $260, etc. The Beychevelle you quote is amazing but at least that is sort of hard to find and was not otherwise listed on Winesearcher. Maybe there was some weird sentimental value.

In general it seemed like retail prices were a floor, not a ceiling in that auction, just get the sense that people were bidding for whom the price of wine is a rounding error.

It is kind of odd to worry that prices are skyrocketing on gems that could formerly be had for a song and then broadcast about them on the most widely read forum about wine. Maybe you're actually also the seller for these and things like Liparita?

I was discouraged from this view before Biden’s economic plans were revealed, I still think now that these dizzying prices will be followed by a recession. Everyone I know is frustrated by the weather because they cannot get their wine to the auction houses fast enough.

It is kind of odd to worry that prices are skyrocketing on gems that could formerly be had for a song and then broadcast about them on the most widely read forum about wine. Maybe you're actually also the seller for these and things like Liparita?

I was surprised that the Beringer Merlot Bancroft Ranch 1993 and 1994 did not jump so much from initial pricing.

I just bid for this, but another person topped me.
