Doisy Daëne label question - "Sauternes" versus "Barsac"

There are definitely two different labels in circulation - I can see pictures of each one on the internet:

Château Doisy Daëne Barsac
Château Doisy Daëne Sauternes

The Dubourdieu family’s website currently recognizes four different labels, with only L’Extravagant being labelled “Sauternes”:

L’Extravagant de Doisy Daëne [“Sauternes”]
Château Doisy Daëne Barsac [“Barsac”]
Château Doisy Daëne Blanc Sec [“Bordeaux”]
Les Etoiles de Doisy Daëne [“Barsac”]

Cellar Tracker only recognizes a “Sauternes” [no “Barsac”]:

**Search wines for 'doisy daene**' - CellarTracker
**Search wines for 'doisy daene barsac**' - CellarTracker

Vivino recognizes both a “Sauternes” and a “Barsac”:

Were there ever two completely different wines here, or have they always been pretty much the same wine, but with two different marketing campaigns?

Thanks.

I don’t know why there are different labels but have always assumed these were the same wine. All Barsac are allowed to be labeled Sauternes but not vice versa.

Thanks for replying - I was skimming through some old threads last night, and I got to hoping you would see this thread.

It does have the feel of a marketing campaign - maybe one negociant had exclusivity to “Sauternes” and another had exclusivity to “Barsac”?

From Jane Anson’s “Inside Bordeaux”: “AOC Barsac: No other communes are allowable for this AOC - but Barsac growers are entitled to use AOC Sauternes as well as their own AOC”. (p.348). Doisy Daene is in Barsac.

But this doesn’t explain why DD chooses to label some wines “Sauternes” and some wines “Barsac” when - to my understanding - they make only one Grand Vin.

Hi all,
I e-mailed the Chateau, and they say that the reason that both labels exist is a request from their negociants. Some preferred to sell Sauternes while others preferred to sell Barsac. They confirm that both labels are the same wine. Also since 2010 they have only bottled as Barsac because they feel that better reflects the character of their soil.

It’s like the late '60s: anything goes. Personally, I think Barsac sounds cooler.

Barsac tells me more about the geographic location that it comes from and the expected style but isn’t as well known outside the industry or knowledgeable wine drinkers- Sauternes may appeal to the general public more and be more recognizable.
