TN: pair of Viettis (2000 Barbaresco and 2019 Arneis)

2000 Vietti Barbaresco Masseria - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco (1/3/2021)
A classically profiled Barbaresco that we enjoyed with roasted lamb and a dark chocolate dessert.

Stood up for a week. Opened two hours before dinner but it did not need a decant. Did not appear to have tons of sediment, so I just did careful pours instead of decanting off sediment.

Nose of sweet tobacco, pencil shavings, butter, anise, and rose. Soft tannins and fairly high acidity but nothing out of balance. Flavors consistent with the nose and had a very long finish.

Don’t think this one is past its prime, but it probably doesn’t have another decade. (93 pts.)

2019 Vietti Roero Arneis - Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Roero (1/3/2021)
Nose of peach, honeydew, something floral (couldn’t quite place), slight hint of cream and nutmeg. Crisp and acidic. Overall a pleasant, easy drinking but surprisingly nuanced wine. Reminded me of a good sauv-blanc, but not as green/grassy. (88 pts.)
