TN: 1996 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese

1996 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (12/9/2020)
#08-97, 8% abv. I must admit to being not as enamoured of this bottle as I was previously (though that was a fair number of years ago). A bit of sponti on the nose, as well as the archetypal creamy blue cheese notes from aged wines of this vineyard. There is a touch of custard as well, and underpinning it all a fair bit of tart fruit. On the palate, this is quite dry, at least by modern standards. A spätlese that runs on its acids more than anything. The fruit isn’t prominent – this is a sculptural, chiselled example of Mosel riesling. (93 pts.)

A fantastic vintage for this wine. A wow experience just to sniff champagne.gif
But the wonderfully balanced acidity is the quality that provides the benchmark
