TN: 2000 Château Pontet-Canet (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac)

  • 2000 Château Pontet-Canet - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (11/22/2020)
Decanted 2 hrs. As I recall from my notes in the aughts, The 00 PC was all about the nose with a palate that was shut down pretty tight. Since 2008, it appears that the gap has narrowed, making this a most satisfying experience. A classically proportioned Pauillac, and forgive the TN cliches, but with clear cut crème de cassis, gravelly earth tones and wait for it….yes the ol’ No.2 pencil – its hard to spin this any other way. While I don’t think this will ever be the pride of any ones cellar, I was really taken with the gentle, almost caressing nature of the mouthfeel, calm, confident, and easy going – a Left Bank spa if you will. 2 bottles left and plenty of life ahead on the open road, so I’ll open the next in 5 to 10 years to see where it ends. I’m optimistic for its future. (93 pts.)

Thanks. I have a few bottles of this. Will wait a little longer.

Nice check-in on an excellent bottle.

Surprised it wasn’t more open after 2 hours. 90 minutes - 2 hours has been the sweet spot lately for me with the 2000s.

I bought some on release (5 for $63@ at Whole Foods! Should have bought more!), but have never opened one. Like David, I’ll wait a while longer.
Cheers,
Warren

This is my tasting note from 2018…one more bottle in the cellar.
“Wonderful perfectly aged and ready for business left bank Bordeaux. This still has zesty tannins but in a very silky and agreeable way. Dark fruits, cassis, plum, leathers, with a hint of black cherry. This wine has a full plush mouth feel and an elegant long finish. Great example of the vintage”
Pontet Canet has been one of my favorite Chateaus for many years. Even off vintages are generally great.
