TN: 1983 Hugel Gewurztraminer Vendange Tardive (France, Alsace)

  • 1983 Hugel Gewurztraminer Vendange Tardive - France, Alsace (11/15/2020)
After a disastrous start to my weekend wine drinking allotment (disappointing '97 Les Pavots), I open this little gem. I wasn’t expecting much since it is pretty old and the cork pushed thru. Pale gold color with a wonderful nose of mandarin orange. On the palate, lots of fruit balanced with nice acidity that exists after all these years. A glycerin feel in the mouth that just rolls over the tongue. Orange zest is quite dominant with musk rose notes. Very long finish of tropical fruits at the back of your throat. You have to love Gewurztraminer. I imagine this was sweeter at a much younger age. Quite happy with this auction purchase. I have 2 others as well as some '76 SGN. (95 pts.)

Nice! A Hugel VT (I think a 1983 Riesling) started me on Alsatian wines.

Love it! I have a 76 of this one and you might have finally inspired me to open it soon.

I think you said it best, “You have to love Gewurztraminer”

Great note and I love this bottle. Its a crowd pleaser and a demonstration of its best.
