TN: 2013 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato

Quite light in colour and starts off showing some advanced nuttiness with a bit of chocolate. It is very earthy and has some mushroom notes too. With air the wine improves and it has some more ethereal florals that you expect from Monprivato. It has vinous sweetness and is very earthy on the finish. It is a decent wine but not a great Monprivato.

What would you say are the Great years for Monprivato?

From the modern era I love the '96 Markus. The '08 is really good too. I’ve also had a couple of very good bottles of the 2010 but there seems to be some bottle variation with this wine.

The Markus?

Jeremy, this sounds like a slightly off bottle. I’ve had the ‘13 Monprivato twice in 2020 with a totally different profile, with fresh red fruit and roses in the nose and mouth. Whether it’s a great vintage for Monprivato? IMHO, I like it a lot but it is, as you mention, light in style but I have faith in it gaining weight with age (and air).
