What ONE BOTTLE from your cellar will be your special occasion wine in five years?

#1 Post by Bruce Rudman »

So, with the arrival of my recent shipments, I gave this some thought last night. I have a fairly deep cellar and will be turning 65 in a little over five years. I previously thought my '12 Harlan, or '12 Schrader Old Sparky would be the wines, but then I got a magnum of '18 Myriad Dr. Crane Elysium.

For me, THE bottle will be a magnum of '18 Myriad Dr. Crane Elysium.

WHAT WILL BE YOURS? Remember, it has to be five years from now, not something to open today.

90 RC may be drinking well then, although I could probably wait a bit.

I also turn 65 in 5 years and have been planning on opening a 1993 Drouhin Musigny for about the last 10.

And Bruce - a belated Happy 60th to you!

From my meagre holdings, I'm thinking my magnum of 2005 Jadot Clos St-Jacques will be just about ready then.

Jay, happy 60th to you! I actually turn 60 in May (my post said I turn 65 in a little over five years), but thanks for the birthday wishes. Hoping by this coming May I can actually have a 60th celebration with friends without worries!

This said, you (and Michael too) must have some patience to wait over 30 years on those Burgs.

Our 50th anniversary will be August 15, 2025. I have a 2008 Cristal in mind for leading the lineup of special bottles that day.

I just received my 2017 Macdonald allocation, in 5 years i will turn 59, so a 2015 Macdonald at 10 years will be the call.

With a number of 2015 German rieslings in our collection, some which will be ready for our 10th wedding anniversary, it's tough to choose. I might have to go with a 2015 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett because it's the only 2015 riesling I have in magnum format, but that may not be ready.

doubt Michael waited 30. He isn’t that old. 90 DRC RC release price was about $660, also came in mixed case of 1990 for $2000. Now worth a bit more.

Hard to say for sure, perhaps 2001 haut brion. Maybe that 1933 madeira (though I like the idea of waiting to 2033 for that).

2010 anniversary so 2025 will have to do something great for 15 since this year we certainly didn't go out! Have a few bottles of 2010 Fourrier CSjJ we found on our "babymoon" in the UK in 2013 and carried back, so likely will be time to open one of those!

Maybe I'll have enough confidence to open a '93 Mugnier Musigny by then. But maybe not.

I have a 5L bottle of 1972 Pousse d'Or Clos de la Bousse d'Or that was supposed to be for my 40th. I didn't end up having a party, so it's still in the cellar. If I don't open it for my 50th in 2022, I vow to open it in 2025 in remembrance of this thread.

Not in five years, but in four, likely a 2005 Guigal La Mouline (his birth year) to celebrate our oldest son going off to college.

If I can, I love to tie in vintages with occasions.

1985 Krug and either, or all of '98 Lafite, '98 Mouton, 98 Haut Brion, '98 Cheval Blanc, '98 LMHB. '98 is our sons birth year, I have a couple of each waiting that I should open while I can :).

I had an 05 La Turque last year, and I’d wait. Or give it 24 hours in a decanter, lol.

For me? No clue. Lots of stuff that I still have that would make for a special evening. I suppose one of these days my last Verset will have to be drunk. :)

In 5 years? It's our 15th anniversary in four years, probably open some 2009 Bordeaux, Pontet Canet, Malescot St. Exupéry.

If it was in the next 10 I've got a bottle of 1996 Salon sitting for my 50th and a 2009 Beaucastel Hommage for our 20th anniversary.

40th wedding anniversary for us so something from ‘85. I’ve got a CdB Cotton Marechaudes direct from Claude’s cellar about 10 years ago; it should be stellar.

Don’t wait. It’s really great right now.

You can get more for 5 years from now.

as I’ve opined many times, I don’t save wine for special occasions. I make the wine the occasion and will open great stuff even during the week. I still drink good and great wine on special occasions—I just don’t save it for them. Never know how long you will be here . . .

Yes it's really great now but it will also be really great in 5 years.
Ripe fruit isn't necessarily a flaw.
