Best Champagne under $40

#1 Post by James Billy » October 26th, 2020, 3:28 am

Yes, I know this must have been discussed countless times (link please), but, in order to finish off the Legendary QPR wines thread, I need to know what you think is the greatest champagne at $40 on the shelf?

Contenders so far:

Laherte Freres Ultradition NV
Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve NV

Wish I could find Peters for that price. Seldom see it under $50 now. Agrapart 7 Crus used to be my go to in this range but it’s now over as well. Still find Dhondt under $40. Bereche is just over the $40 mark.

I appreciate the link, and Empire is a great source generally. That said, $49 is not $40. I don't say that to split hairs and do appreciate the link, just feel that misses the target by too much for me to put it in the $40 conversation. Of course, I understand that is just a current link and perhaps you find better prices other times. In my local market it's now closer to $60 so I may well consider some at the price linked.

QQ: is Champagne hit by tariffs now? If not — imagine the blow-outs we’re going to see this Holiday season on bubbles. I wouldn’t stock up just yet. There must be an amazing back-up of the stuff waiting to let loose.

49 all in is basically 40 with shipping and tax, unless you’re looking at champagne that’s 30 before shipping and tax.

For me, actually under 40 it's Laherte Freres as you said in the OP. Beyond that the best champagnes under $40 aren't champagne.

To add to the lack of consensus, how about Lanson Black Label Brut NV? It has managed to stay under $40 while my former favorites that used to be under $40 have crept over that bar the past year or so. Lanson is very decent, I think, but seems to have little cachet.

I can second Laherte Freres, Bonville, the Hebrart wines. Some of the others are hard to find under $40. With Delamotte, I prefer the Blanc de Blancs, but it's over $40.

Also, there are style differences, really is no "best".

Charles Heidsieck is great buy under $40. It's somewhat a more mature style since it has a larger percentage of older reserve wines (although I seem to recall a post from Brad Baker that the average age has been dropping as stocks dwindle).

Christian Busin is now owned and produced by Labruyere family:

https://www.decanter.com/wine-news/labr ... gne-28185/

My understanding is bottles labeled as Christian Busin are now produced only for long time, French customers. All other production is under Labruyere label. So, Busin bottles available in the US market now, or after 2012, are bottles procured through alternative channels, i.e. Grey Market, and not through an authorized, National importer.

Grande reserve has a bit too much dosage for my taste.
I don't mind a little higher dosage if the wine is well balanced. I've participated in a few blind dosage trials and was certain going into them that I would prefer low or no-dosage. I was wrong! I tended to prefer 6-8 g/l and these often presented drier (weird?) than the 2-4 g/l wines. The non-dose are easy to spot but, contrary to my beliefs, are not usually "better," at least to me. YMMV

This was from Lopawine.com and is an absolute steal at that price. You'd have to email Scott to get the deal as it's not on the website.
YMMV
I’m just comparing to the rest of vilmart’s range. The grande reserve has the highest dosage of their wines.

Thanks guys,

Lots of good suggestions. So far, I don't see much agreement, though. Nothing gets more than 2 votes AFAICS.

Keep 'em comin'!
Looks to me like Hebrart is in the lead with 6 votes. Delamotte is at 4 votes. Haven't counted the rest.

Gotcha, but I don't think Vilmart makes another contender in the sub-$40 range and I think, compared to the others mentioned up thread, it should be seriously considered at that price point. I'd definitely put it up against the Hebrart and Delamotte wines in this category (or any others). It may not be everyone's favorite, but for some I'm confident it would be.
