TN: 2016 Cantina del Pino Ovello

#1 Post by J Dove » October 17th, 2020, 10:28 am

Beautiful wine. Aromatic, complex nose — raspberry, loam, orange peel, dried flowers, bit of pine. Mid weight but really explosive palate start to finish. Love the balance of this. Definite keeper. Tasted next to the Alessandria Monvigliero and paired with Pork Tenderloin Tonnato. Held its own but damn If the Alessandria isn’t stunning on day two. Looking forward to following this very fine Barbaresco. RIP Renato Vacca. Very highly recommended.

In the past, I and some other WBers had found these quite oaky. (There was a thread on that three years ago: Cantina del Pino Barbaresco - what's the oak story?) If that's not the case now, that would be good news!

I’m pretty sensitive. Had a hard time with a bottle of Haut Bergey last night for that very reason. I really didn’t pick up anything that I’d trace back to oak. I’ll look closer when I come back to it...

Couple days later — rounder, lush, powdery tannins. I notice a little oak that I didn’t pick up on before. It’s very much in the background — but, it is there. High hopes for this one. I grabbed a mixed case of Gallina and Albesani based on this showing. Really outstanding and worth seeking out.
