TN: 1998 Joseph Roty - Charmes-Chambertin (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru)

1998 Domaine Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru (9/6/2020)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over 3 hours on Day 1; had last little glass on Day 2 –
– same bottle as Robert Pavlovich’s note on the same date –

NOSE: initially tight, but then opened to a dark/smoky Nose with some aged Pinot funk and a noticeable dollop of camphor or something medicinal; eventually expressive, with lots of dark tertiary aromas (very earthy; leather); hint of stony mineral. Complex; full; far from “pretty.”

BODY: hazy brickish garnet color; medium-light to medium bodied.

TASTE: well into tertiary territory; earthy; some fruit leathers — baked red fruits; no tannin; high acidity; alc. well-hidden; in its prime window, for my preferences. Still good on Day 2. Overall, an excellent and complete wine, but burlier and darker than I prefer.
