Mine is in route to LA, and spent the day between two cities with temperatures of over 90 degrees. I have emailed to ask for a replacement or refund. This is really surprising for such a reputable winemaker.

Offering to replace it if there's a problem when I open it is pretty useless, since I don't plan to open them anytime soon.
You should ask them to pull the vinfillment temperature report.

Mine is on fedex vehicle for delivery, one for Sunday and two for Monday. Maybe, supposedly.

Same here (In PA), left Grove City this AM. All for Sunday delivery!

2 of 3 arrived today for me, too...the other box appears to be in Florida?! Pretty sure that’s not a great place for wine at the moment, even before considering I’m in the Midwest.

Since I started this thread, just wanted to report that my wines arrived on Friday and everything seemed just fine, with no leaks, raised corks, or high fills. Chris offered to send me replacements at no charge no matter what, but I felt that if the wines looked okay I didn't want to cause them any extra expense. Maybe next time they should have the shipping company monitor conditions instead of just shipping out on a particular date so it causes less issues?

I wish their shipping company would do away with the styrofoam, around me it’s impossible to recycle anymore and ends up in the landfill.

James - hope yours gets delivered. In typical FedEx fashion, still saying by eod today but no update since 1 am Saturday and no “on the truck” message. It is hilarious as they literally drive right by my house taking it from one facility to another then backtrack to deliver. Rainy and cool so no worries other than the signature hassle.

Funny, got update an hour ago that now it will be tomorrow. Until then it said EOD today. Agreed weather is cool so not concerned but just dont understand how they do their updates. Until Friday, it was going to be Tuesday delivery, then moved to Sunday, and now Monday.

I received 1 of 2 cases yesterday. Both had been scheduled for Monday. Bottles look just fine. Btw - they shipped with the corrugated inserts vs styro.

The last couple years my wines also came with the corrugated inserts, it may be worth it to ship the Styros back to viinfilment then maybe they’ll get it .

Well you are doing better than me: now says no scheduled delivery date available at this time. Are they really that overwhelmed they can’t figure this out? I mean, this is their only job

Yes, for whatever reason, it was not delivered though it was due to be delivered on Friday. Its says today, we'll see I guess.

Got two of the boxes...somehow they are two days ahead of the other box. The joys of FedEx.

My boxes were both egg carton style, not styro.

Got my two cases in SW Michigan on Saturday...absolutely HATE the old styro shippers...between the tiny little pellets and static-electricity the annoyance is becoming an issue. But, the wines far outweigh the frustration factor and there's something deeply satisfying in firing up the Dyson and sucking up the offending white environmental turds.

The broken styrofoam with the bits and pieces is typical. Use a hand held vac to clean up.

Just opened my case, and the bottoms of the styrofoam had broken, and bottles were covered in styrofoam. I just run them under some cold water and towel dry.

Bedrock shipper seems to have real problem with the quality of the styro they are using. Very typical to open box and styrofoam bits are all over the bottles and the box( and subsequently on my cellar floor).

Mine arrived with the egg shell cardboard shipper. Last few orders from Bedrock came in the cardboard shippers.
Prior shipments that used styro had broken bottoms. The bottles were fine; the styro shipper was not.

Mine arrived also ( 36 bottles), 3 cases. Need to speak with them about the styrofoam. Every year same thing, whomever they’re using as a supplier is terrible. Always busted in case, little balls stuck everywhere. Still see it from wine shippers ( and some northeast stores I purchase from) but none anywhere near as bad as what bedrock uses.

I hate styro! That picture looks farily typical for bedrock in the past. I thought they had switched to Cardboard though

This is surprising from Bedrock on the shipping.

We went round and round on the styro and cardboard last year. I believe it turned out to be the 3rd party ignoring their wishes. Mine came half one way and half the other way, which is not what a winery would stipulate.

There were a few producers on the board who’ve said pandemic-related supply chain issues made it hard to source enough cardboard shippers. I suspect that’s the case here.

I really do feel for the wineries, this is difficult for them too. I wish there was an easy way for me to put my pulp shippers I receive back into the shipping ecosystem, but for now they simply go in the recycling bin as I have a basement full of them already...

Wine shops that ship love to have recycled shippers...it cuts down on their costs if they don't have to buy them.

Shipped (CA)Monday, 10/5; arrived(IA) Monday 10/12. Bottles were warm (weekend in the truck?) but no apparent bottle issues.
Better styro this shipment (or much more careful handling). [highfive.gif] Prior 3 shipments seemed to have featured self disintegrating styro.

Interesting to read through this thread. Random thoughts from an Oregon producer...

Yes it seems too warm to ship through Northern California at this point. That said, I've been trying for years and it's impossible to get everything right and ship at the exact moment things are perfect everywhere along the route.

Do you ship to Atlanta when it's possibly in the 70s or even 80 during the day but still not subfreezing over the Rockies? Or wait for it to get colder in GA but risk 10F in Colorado on the way? What's the right move each and every time? There isn't one, you try your best.

If you and every other winery are waiting for the exact time for each location, can shippers get all the wine out on the same day? It's like harvest time, you can't process everything in a day so sometimes picking waits a little or is sped up a little, or fruit waits overnight to be processed. There's a limit to what a supply chain or a production line can handle. Shipping is no different.

What if that right day is a Thursday but that means wine to LA is going to sit over a weekend, and people there specifically say "only ship to me on a Monday or Tuesday!" What if next week the forecast is hot again, do you ship now and violate the no over weekend protocol or do you wait and get an email that other wineries have shipped, where's my order?

How does wine ever get to Miami? It's never cool there unless it's subzero en route.

I literally got an email recently from a CA winery GM who bought from me asking - where's my wine? I wanted to reply, it's waiting until weather cools. Plus, harvest. But already it's sounds like I'm late with the delivery and that bugs me, gets me thinking - how can I make it right each time? No matter what you do, you have to accept you're going to have customers wondering if you know what the f*ck you're doing.

My solution is - if you ever have an issue, let me know and I'll make good on it. Yes, Marshall, that means years from now when you open something that's not right and you think - will the winery take this back or make good on the purchase? Yes. If that wine's available, it will get replaced. Or credited to you. Or refunded. I'm willing to pay a price for the certainty that, no matter what happens, people aren't out their investment in my wines. It's worth it to me and it's how I hope any producer would react. Will someone game that system and get credit for good wine they claimed was bad? Maybe, but how pathetic. I'm not worried about my business succeeding or failing because of people like that.

Not the PA LCB... :(
Ha! I'd imagine there are shops in a nearby state that would like them if you do any business there?

Do you ship to Atlanta when it's possibly in the 70s or even 80 during the day but still not subfreezing over the Rockies? Or wait for it to get colder in GA but risk 10F in Colorado on the way? What's the right move each and every time? There isn't one, you try your best.
Nice post in general, Vincent. I'm wondering if cool weather is as much of an issue as heat, though? If something is going ground I'd imagine that there's much less likelihood of wine freezing in a truck container as opposed to overheating. Wine probably has to get down below 20 degrees to freeze, and with the heat coming off of the truck, the road, and insulation from other packages I'm guessing it would need to be below zero for an extended period of time for wine to get too cold?

As far as shipping to Miami, they just drink rum there, right? [cheers.gif]

Here in the Portland Oregon area, there is only one place that will accept Styrofoam for recycling. But it is worth the drive. They convert the Styrofoam into some kind of liquid plastic. The only other place in Oregon (as far as I know) that takes styrofoam for recycling is in Tillamook County, out on the Oregon coast. I used to take my Styrofoam wine shippers to my local wine monger, and he would use them for shipping his own mail order sales, but he stopped
Accepting my styro shippers during the pandemic. So I am left going back to the Styrofoam recycling place.
As for my pulp shippers, I simply put them in the recycling with the rest of my paper stuff.

Sudden cold snap in New England destroyed two cases of wine headed my way a couple of years ago. Corks all protruded, capsules busted off, and wine seeping down the sides of the bottles once the extruded ice melted.

Heat is more challenging than cold, I think that’s true. But cold can ruin wine and it takes something being left on a dock, or delivered to a porch and left, or whatever. Bottom line - you can’t be sure end to end for each shipment, but you can guarantee things. I sleep better at night doing that. Life’s too short.

You can actually melt the styrofoam yourself with acetone - it’s a bit of a mess but it’s also kind of neat (and a fun project for school age kids):

I dunno, I'm not overly concerned about these getting cooked in transit. Those of us in PDX and Seattle will have them tomorrow or Thursday, most of that going through relatively cool areas. Do we really think these are gonna get cooked by passing through a hot zone for a few hours on one day of their travel, especially considering that the bottles very likely left the facility cool?
It doesn't take very long to get over 100 degrees inside a container in the hot weather, unless it's refrigerated, which most aren't. I'm very careful with my wine, and try to not ship anything if it's going to be over 75 degrees anywhere along the route.
The cold mass of the wine inside the trailer is not going to allow it to become that hot inside. If it were empty yes, but that’s not the case. I can have a case of wine in a styro shipper on the floor of my garage, metal building with afternoon sun exposure, on a 100+° day and I cam open that shipper in the heat if the afternoon and the bottle will be under 75°. Now, if that case were surrounded by 300 more cases all coming from cold storage the day before it would still be in the high 50s to low 60s. People unnecessarily freak out about shipping temps. Your wine is more likely to cook on the shelf at a retail store than when being shipped from cold storage.
