Did anyone else get a shipment notification from Bedrock?

#1 Post by Marshall Manning » October 5th, 2020, 7:55 pm

I received an email today saying that my Bedrock order had shipped today, when it was 90 degrees in Napa today and will go through Redding where it's 94 or so the next two days. Why anyone would automatically ship in this weather just baffles me. If you care about your wine and your customers you don't ship when it's that hot, period.

Is it shipping temp controlled (e.g. ColdChain)? If not, that's absurd.

It just said FedEx Ground on the email, so I'm guessing there is nothing special about it.

The email from Bedrock says, “your order has shipped” but it appears that only the labels have been created. It may still be a few days before the wine actually travels, but yeah, that’s hot.

Here in Oregon, my Bedrock purchases always ship on Mondays and arrive on Wednesdays. So I am sure that this one will, too. The good news is that nights are very cool. Should be ok.

When I check the tracking number with FedEx is says it arrived at the FedEx location in Fairfield, and has expected delivery on Friday, so it sounds to me like it's actually reached their facility. This is my first order from Bedrock, so I don't know their normal procedure.

Thanks Philip. It's not the nights I'm concerned about though. Trucks going through Redding get very hot.

The release email said all orders would ship October 5. If you request another date they’re usually very happy to help out.

The weather is a separate issue and I imagine is driven by some weather algorithm of a logistics partner (doubt they’re packing and shipping all these mixed cases themselves), so can’t really speak to that. Mine is on its way to the East coast but should have a nice path of mild weather on its route.

Bedrock packages are shipped via vinfillment which (not sure how) can track the temperatures where the wine was. Here’s one they pulled in may for me because I was concerned about temps.

5/20 5:42am SACRAMENTO CA – 61 degrees
5/21 4:07am SACRAMENTO, CA – 62 degrees
5/21 5:17 pm SALT LAKE CITY, UT – 69 degrees
5/22 6:26 am BRADY, NE – 61 degrees
5/22 6:31 pm MAHOMET, IL – 71 degrees
5/23 3:16 am GROVE CITY, OH – 56 degrees

Labels have been created, will arrive next Monday. Was concerned about sitting over the weekend, but at least temps in VA have cooled down to 60’s/70’s, so not as concerned once it gets in the area.

A label has been created. If you look at the tracking info you will probably see it has not left the fulfillment facility yet.

That might be true with some of them, but my tracking info now says:

"IN TRANSIT
Departed FedEx location
SACRAMENTO, CA"

I'm no FedEx expert (or would that be FedExpert?), but it sounds like it's definitely on the way.

Though I live in Seattle my wine is being shipped to PDX with expected delivery on Friday. I must admit I find this an odd (read too early) set ship date of early Oct as the standard for the summer offer. Why not just wait a few more weeks which would reduce a little of the temp exposure for ground shipping?

I dunno, I'm not overly concerned about these getting cooked in transit. Those of us in PDX and Seattle will have them tomorrow or Thursday, most of that going through relatively cool areas. Do we really think these are gonna get cooked by passing through a hot zone for a few hours on one day of their travel, especially considering that the bottles very likely left the facility cool?

My shipment heading to Oregon left Sacramento before 8 today. It's currently 55-60 degrees in the Sacramento Valley. My shipment should be through Redding within the next two hours. I don't think that valley heat is going to be a problem.

It doesn't take very long to get over 100 degrees inside a container in the hot weather, unless it's refrigerated, which most aren't. I'm very careful with my wine, and try to not ship anything if it's going to be over 75 degrees anywhere along the route.

Just an FYI, I had emailed Bedrock immediately after I received the shipping notice, and I heard back from Chris today. He said they would take care of it if the wine appeared damaged in any way.

I got my shipment today up here in Seattle. All bottles cool to the touch (not cold). These were in styro shippers, which I hate environmentally, but they certainly offer better thermal insulation than the pulp shippers. For what it's worth, earlier Bedrock shipments were in pulp shippers but the last two have been in styro. I recall there being a discussion that the pulp shippers were difficult to source at some point this year?

Yep, FedEx ground. Even stranger, they were in Troutdale last night with a Thursday delivery date and then this morning they were showing as out for delivery.

Mine is in route to LA, and spent the day between two cities with temperatures of over 90 degrees. I have emailed to ask for a replacement or refund. This is really surprising for such a reputable winemaker.

Offering to replace it if there's a problem when I open it is pretty useless, since I don't plan to open them anytime soon.

That was my concern too, Roy. This is my first order from the winery, but I have some older bottles from retail and auction that I was planning on drinking first, so these were going to go to my locker for a few years.

Great wines, people, and service but seems to be somewhat of a pattern of questionable shipping decisions. The weather doesn't appear favorable to ship across the country to East Coast this week and that follows what happened with the Spring supplemental release which was shipped across the country over Memorial Day weekend also in high temps

Well, Alan.....Bedrock uses a shipping fulfillment company....so those are the people making those shipping decisions, not Bedrock themselves. They've always, with me,
erred on the side of caution. But if there's a problem Chris & Morgan immediately take care of it.

My order arrived here in Portland on Thursday, which is contrary to all of my prior orders, which have always arrived on a Wednesday. The delay seems to have been in southern Oregon. Yes, the order did pass through some heat in Northern California, but I suspect that all is well.

I am aware that they use a shipping fulfillment company and totally understand that Chris & Morgan wil immediately address any concerns people have. What seems strange to me is they ship to the East Coast much earlier than other wineries like Myriad, Rivers Marie, Carlisle, Kutch, Rhys, etc. so it appears to be an issue they can avoid from their side without having to fix it after the fact. I also know that I am totally guilty on my side of not preemptively reaching out to them to request a later shipping date after the order is placed but hey as we all know shipping season creeps up fast and some of us lose track of things......

Tom
You don't think the winery tells the fulfillment company when to ship?

Of course the winery tells the fulfillment company the time preiod of when to ship as evidenced in Bedrock's release letter saying orders would ship on Oct 5. I've already conceded that since I know their pattern of unfavorable shipping decisions that I should have proactively reached out to them to push out the date. But the broader question as I raised above is lots of wineries per their standard practice consistently ship a month after Bedrock. Seems to me they could avoid the potential problems and grief of people complaining by simply changing their practices to be more in line with others and just be conservative and ship a few weeks later unless someone specifically requests an earlier shipping date

I'm trying to figure out what is going on with my shipment actually. says it went through Fairfield to Tracy, but then tracking says it left Tracy on Wednesday afternoon and then no new tracking info since and its been 2 days. typically Fedex shipments have a new arrival and departure scan at least once per day. anyone ever seen something like this before??
