What de Négoce wine are you drinking tonight?

#1 Post by MatthewT » October 1st, 2020, 6:43 pm

This has been suggested by multiple people so let's do it.

The wines are about to arrive and everyone is going to have an opinion.

We'll use this thread for tasting notes on de Négoce.

The other thread will be used for new offers and to praise and bitch about everything de Négoce.

Yours,
MatthewT, de Négoce cult leader

EDIT: If you can, please post as much as you are willing about the background of the # wine you are drinking. Most don't know what the #s are so helpful if you identify it by what it is, even down to "Cam said $90 retail we paid $12" etc.

Rodrigo B made a spreadsheet w/ all the info of each wine if you want a reference:

de Negoce spreadsheet by Rodrigo!

I'm just here for the validation of my purchases. Very rare for me to buy before I try and for me CH had a roughly 2 to 1 hit-to-miss ratio.
I'm hoping these are of slightly higher calibre.

Wine on the way! I received No. 1 in June. Flew from CA to KS with a couple bottles. Even though it was too early to drink them, we really enjoyed them. Looking forward to comparing notes when the rest (11) get here.

I've had a couple bottle of #16 Sav Blanc. I am lacking in knowledge to even try to give it a tasting note but me and my wife both enjoyed it and were happy with the purchase. We found it very nice on a warm afternoon

Pobega’d an OG 6 last night, and... it was good. Drank like a $40-50 Napa cab. Very even keel over 3 hours of sipping. Good nose with the cork popping, just a bit of heat on the finish of the first two sips, but that resolved pretty quickly. Then went into cruise control and stayed in a good spot the rest of the night. Wife liked it, which helped me break the news of the other cases coming. Overall a good show for $15 landed. This will probably get me back on the DN train, as I paused after 5 cases to see what I was buying. Not disappointed at all. Nice job Cam

Coravined a glass of N.05 right off the truck. Nose is incredible. Big oak and red fruit. Hot for sure but that blew off in a few minutes. It is a bit disjointed and young at the moment, but there is potential here for a really good wine. All the elements I like are there, it just doesn’t mesh right now. It is so young on the palate, I just keep going back to the nose. Cam’s notes were accurate, minus the “velvety” finish. Just needs time.

Drinking the OG 16 Sauv Blanc again tonight - killer, and helps renew my faith, given the convo in the main thread...

It's not tonight and everyone has liked it but I've had 4 or 5 #2's and I think it's a phenomenal wine. #3 was also good albeit not as good as #2. Those are the only two I have had delivered thus far. My sister-in-law has had #16 and loves it.

Not tonight, but I have already received OG 1 and OG 16. Also don't knowledge to give tasting notes, but I enjoyed both of them. For OG 1 I have been decanting it for at least a couple of hours. I do think both are very good values for the prices.

Had the #16 and agree with everyone else that its a really really good Sauv. Blanc.

Popped a #14 Rose, which was... not good. It's not offensive or anything like that, it just lacks flavor. It tastes like a bottle of Rose mixed with water.

So far DN is 1 for 3 for me, with #16 being awesome, and #12 and #14 missing the mark. I'm looking forward to getting my reds in the next few weeks.

#17 is a Cab with small amounts of blending. Popped yesterday after finding the case waiting on my doorstep. (Whole “nother story.) Lovely, lighter weight Cab that is fresh and lively. Acidity is much more prevalent than most Napa Cabs that I’m familiar with and this is an great steak wine that cuts thru fat. No Flab on this one. My only dN purchase because I don’t usually buy cases but I am so glad i bit on this one! Will be even better with some bottle time. A real Bargain!

#17 is interesting cause it's by far the cheapest cab sold to date. $10 for sale but we think a $30 retail cab. Both of them are the absolute bottom of the ranges.

And it's pretty much universally loved. I think 2 people didn't like it for 10 that did.

I passed on #17 but bought #20 the reserve.

Drank a N.09 last night. Not bad. Cam describes this one as "sexy juice," and despite inducing a groan initially, it actually kind of fits.

TN:
Elegant wine. A little restrained on the nose, with ripe strawberry and a hint of leather. Fruit-forward, medium bodied, mostly strawberry and red cherry with a little rosemary, cola, and black pepper. Medium-plus acid and alcohol. Long finish. Still young. Excellent QPR at De Negoce price ($10), but less so at the supposed $45 retail.

I drank it right off the truck more or less, so it might settle down or age into something better.

I am finishing off half of the bottle from last night, stored in the fridge with just a cork - still fresh, lively, and damn tasty. I think you are going to be pleased.

#12 Napa Chardonnay...fresh off the UPS truck and in the fridge. My first impression is how fantastic the nose is. The palate is what I would expect from a normal mid level napa Chardonnay. I guess I expect less, but this is now the 2nd De Négoce wine that has over delivered for the price. I would easily pay $30-40 for this wine.

Selfish request: I've got dozens and dozens of dN cases coming...most of which I intend to leave untouched for months, and most likely years.

That said, in addition to the whites, Rosé and possibly Pinot, some reds will likely be drinking well sooner rather than later. Any drinking window guidance you can provide will be MUCH APPRECIATED.

The aroma is really nice. I set up myself a semi-blind last weekend with 2018 dN#12 NV, 2019 dN#23 Carneros, 2018 Claudine RRV, 2016 Dehlinger RRV, and 2016 Smith-Madrone Spring Mtn. dN#12 got highest score in aroma, and tied with Dehlinger for the highest total score. Pleasantly surprised when the result was revealed. dN#23 finished last, but not by much.

Interesting to see the wildly divergent views on #12. Impressive that Richard put it over the Claudine, which I'm pretty sure is DuMol (and should be exact same wine). I didn't order #12, but if that's basically the worst reviewed one so far (other than maybe the 14 Rose which I don't care about) I'd say that's pretty good. As someone with a very non-fussy palate I'm pretty optimistic on all of these

#1 was a $10 wine with 14 reviews and a 90 score on CT fwiw. I believe MM is the only person who hasn't liked it. I haven't gotten it yet. It's the most likely to be an actual shiner given 6666 cases sold and words "exact" in the SF article. It might be young but I'm guessing it's an absurd QPR for $10.

Think it mostly has to do with oaky/buttery preference. If you like oak/butter you will enjoy it. If not, then you wont.

Point of order...
When somebody posts “I drank a #[x],” can we also post the variety (and preferably appellation)?
I personally can’t remember what each of the dozens of numbered wines is.

I like it - never said I didn’t, but in comparison, it’s not as strong as 2 or 11. Some of those CT reviews are mine, BTW
I’ll be curious as to your thoughts. It’s not at all like N.02.
Oh, I thought you flat out did not like it. Sorry.

I guess seems safe to say #1 #2 and #11 are all good QPRs for you? I think those 3 are some of the strongest offerings QPR wise, btw. (With only trying 2). I'd add 6, 8, as well. No clue how to view 20+ until people try. He hiked prices and it's a crapshoot more than the 1-11.

That's a good idea actually. I second. Say the # and if possible post as little or much about the # as you feel obliged so people know wtf it is. Can be price, appellation, even a short description. I edited top post suggesting.

Open #7 (Sta. Rita Hills). All in for ~$13. Maybe from Luna Vineyards? Pours light strawberry. Typical nose. Slight barnyard. Drinks very well. Light body. Well balanced. Very pleased.

Would be interested if folks would be willing to pay an additional $3-5/bottle above what was paid for the various offers? Ie: great QPR at $15, what about at $18? Asking because if offers come out again (as was mentioned by Cam previously, but at higher prices) would be helpful for folks who did not purchase first time around but due to positive feedback are interested in purchasing second time around.

As someone with a very non-fussy palate I'm pretty optimistic on all of these
Toby, I did read the info about Claudine and wanted it to win. I guess the semi-blind proved that I am no Jeb. dN#12 did lose points in balance because of its high oak. I look forward to re-doing this in 6 months.

They are CA Chardonnays, anyways. Not something people always agree on.

This is a great question that's practical. But I'd also be curious at what price point in general people would say "NOPE". Largely hypothetical but that's how you truly get at the QPR. Now some people won't pay >$30 for a bottle of wine, period. So that's not really relevant. But for the people on this board that do buy $100, $200, bottles, I will be fascinated to hear their views on the bottles as they come and what they think they'd pay for it if offered a case today.

I got a case of the #8, a $14 Cabernet some time ago. it was ok, but nothing special. Maybe I opened too soon.
