TNs: 82 Belland Santenay La Comme and 17 Guillemot SLB Serpentieres

  • 1982 Adrien Belland Santenay 1er Cru La Comme - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay 1er Cru (9/26/2020)
Found this on a retail shelf several months ago and could not walk away. Paired tonight with roast chicken. Using the Ah-so only succeeded in pushing the fungus-laden cork onto the bottle. Not a good beginning; expectations headed downward. But whoa, the nose was alive! Lots of fulsome, perfumed floral notes along with ripe plum, berry, damp soil, and iron particles. Layers of slightly rustic but very clearly delineated red berry fruit on the palate with brambles, dark soil, and iron. Bright acidity and granular tannin. Moderately long finish of iron-inflected red mulberry fruit. Very, very much alive and seemingly in the middle of its drinking window. Who knew. (91 pts.)
  • 2017 Domaine Pierre Guillemot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Serpentières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru (9/24/2020)
Translucent ruby color. Loads of fresh floral scents on the nose combined with plum pits and hints of earth. Initially glossy but deepening layers of fresh red and dark plum fruit on the palate with pliant earthy raspberry and bits of iron alongside. Crisp acidity and firm tannin buried by fruit. Long, fresh finish of bright young fruit with dirt and grip in spades. Bursting with life and promise, this wine was quite delicious and not yet shutting down. (91 pts.)
