US Chardonnay Producer Recommendations

#1 Post by Nicholas C » September 19th, 2020, 7:16 am

This summer I have been drinking a lot more white, and have decided I really like chardonnay and after 15 years with this hobby I should start cellaring some!

What producers do people recommend trying, or lists to join? Im on Kongsgaard (active), Aubert (waitlist), Rivers Marie (just signed up in August)

Depends what you like? What Chardonnays have you found you enjoy. There is so much variety of flavors and styles that it might help to know which ones you like at the moment?

Example, I really enjoy all the producers Dennis mentioned "Walter Scott, Goodfellow, back fill Arcadian, Rhys.
" but on the other hand I don't enjoy Aubert, Liquid Farm or Rivers Marie. They are all too ripe for my palate.

Yeah, at least IMO, Sean makes a great point - if you like Aubert, I wouldn't be getting on lists like Walter Scott or Goodfellow until you've actually tried the wines, because stylistically they are nothing like Aubert. That said, personally speaking, Goodfellow & Walter Scott are two of my favorite Chardonnay producers from anywhere, including Burgundy.

Forman and Stony Hill. There's always the possibility that you like multiple styles, as I do.

the best domestic chardonnay being produced IMO is at Walter Scott. But as mentioned, depends a lot on your style. Goodfellow also makes great linear chardonnay.

Thanks for your reply’s and recommendations. I’ll buy some different producers you mentioned and see what I like.

Thanks for the link to the other thread Vince L. Exactly what I was looking for.

I think there are a lot of good suggestions on here and I'll add one more based on what you seem to like -- Lagom (made by Torrin) Spanish Springs Vineyard Chardonnay. It's really great if you like rich (but still balanced in my opinion) Chardonnay.

If you prefer more austere less oak influence, Scribe makes a dandy - their Estate version.

Excellent rec. I would add Jamie Kutch to this as well. His low alc chards are dreamy.
So shines a good deed in a weary world!

I am not a huge Chardonnay guy but I have enjoyed Smith Madrone, not too oaky but fresh with plenty of acid.

Based on OPs current likes, I'd add DuMol, Varner, Brewer Clifton and Hartford Court.

If you want to cellar U.S. chardonnay, I’d recommend Mount Eden.

I'll second Hartford Court, but I've been drinking Dutton-Goldfield for a decade and my favorite Chardonnay is still a 12+ year old Rued Vineyard (specifically, it's the Green Valley of the RRV -- you get green apple from these when they're young). I cellar these deliberately. They taste on the tart side to me at 4-8 years old (depending on the vintage), are very lovely at 10, and really shine at 12-15+ years. One of my "aha" wines. They tend to taste slightly acidic when young and integrate and mature beautifully over time.

Another in the Russian River Valley I recommend is Inman Family Wines. While I first met Kathleen Inman during a RRV Winegrower's association tasting some 5-7 years ago, I still remember her Chardonnay, which was delightful and highly appealing to the red wine drinkers in my family. It was drinking very well even young, and I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a bottle today.

I would add Paul Lato from Santa Maria and Ketan Mody (Beta), if you can find it. In my experience, they make both camps pretty happy.

I'm a big fan of Peter Michael's. As well as Aubert and Kistler. But, for better QPR, I go for Goodfellow (very, very nice), Liquid Farm (ok, I like the Four) and my new favorite EIEIO which I found during the January Berserker event.

+1

Also, I really enjoy Domaine Drouhin Arthur and Belle Pente’s BP Vineyard Chard.
