Cali Cab producers who make fine Sauvignon Blanc

#1 Post by Dan Kravitz »

I know they're out there. I've had a few (and probably posted on some) over the past few years. But let's hear it from those who know.

Please offer the names of California producers of Cabernet Sauvignon who also produce fine Sauvignon Blanc, not difficult to source and moderately priced (let's say $30 tops).

Ten years ago I started drinking Sauvignon Blanc, previously not a wine I enjoyed. I do not like most of the offerings from New Zealand, I hate grapefruit juice and anything that has any of those flavors and aromas does not do it for me. Aromas of grass, hay, lemon, lime, even cat pee (all in balance and moderation please) and especially wet stones and minerals are a pleasure.

Please name names.

Thank you.

Fan of Spottswoode, Heitz, Mondavi, Altamura. Was going to say Screaming Eagle, but they are just a tad north of $30! [wink.gif]

+1 on Spottswoode, but they are also north of $30, at least in the Bay Area. I would also recommend Frog's Leap, Cliff Lede and Dry Creek.

Massican is currently available at wine.com CA warehouse. This is the most mineral I have had so far and I enjoyed it.

Edit: also available at massican.com.

Maybe not easily accessible but I really enjoy Becklyn's SB.

Others that are easier to obtain that I enjoy are Cliff Lede, Groth, and Darioush.

Curious why only cab producers? Merry Edwards tops my list and can be found for low $30’s listed, and can be had under $30 with discounts.

I recently had a frogs leap and liked it, but didn’t compare to Merry Edwards for me.

Maze Clew SB is really good.

North of your price point, Realm Fidelio is really really good.

Second on the Massican recommendation, best SB I’ve tasted in a long time. While the winery does not make cab, the owner/winemaker is also the winemaker at Larkmead if that is somehow relevant.

Ehlers makes a great Sav Blanc around $30, Gamble Family is a bit more expensive around $70-80 but is fantastic and one of the best SBs I’ve had (very Meyer lemon dominant in a good way).

We can also suggest Larkmead since were talking about Massican. It’s tasty Although very expensive. Joseph Phelps has a nice SB but that’s also up there in price.

None of my local shops carry Massican, but Wine Access has the SB right at $30:

I’ve never tried it but very excited once it arrives, especially given the board recommendations.

Bedrock makes a Cabernet (sometimes), and their SB is nice.
The Becheur SB is a 2020 QPR front-runner. If someone told you it was $30, you’d have no problem believing them, but it’s half that.

Frankly, I think the best in Dan's actual price range is Mondavi Reserve, also a nod to Flora Springs and Charles Krug, and St. Supery and Rutherford Ranch as a sleeper both under $15.

I don't taste a ton of Napa SB, but did like the '18 Amici SB, which was a KL closeout under $20. More fig and melon fruit than grapefruit, and minimal oak, but with decent acidity. I'd imagine the real price is $30 or less?

Spottswoode, as mentioned!

Wow! A lot of great replies, including old faves, names I know for wines other than SB and completely new names. I have to comment that most of you misread my OP. I set $30 as a ceiling, not a floor!

Some comments on some specifics: Spotteswoode has been a special-occasion go-to for me for decades, including the Sauvignon Blanc, which is barely over my limit and well worth it.

Heitz!?! I've probably had 50 Heitz wines in the last 50 years, I don't ever remember a Sauvignon Blanc! At ~$20, I'm in.

Thanks to Ed Steinway who hit a trifecta for me. Love Cliff Lede as a producer, haven't had the SB but an easy one to try. I've had several vintages of Frog's Leap, always enjoyed them, time to revisit. And Dry Creek has been a favorite for decades, although I drink more of their reds than whites.

Massican is at my limit, but so many reccos that I will try it.

I like Grgich Hills SB, but IIRC it needs some bottle age, not remotely a fault, but a consideration.

Becheur sounds great for many reasons, don't know how I'll get it to Maine, but I'm going to try. Charles Krug is a favorite.

There are a few suggestion from producers I prefer not to buy from, for various reasons: Duckhorn, Quintessa, Robert Mondavi, Martin Ray.

But so many great suggestions that I will have lots of new things to try.

Thanks, board!
