TN: 2018 Vino di Anna Palmento

100-year-old bush-vine Nerello Mascalese grown on the north face of Mt Etna.

This is a natural wine, but is clean, and well-made. Made by Anna Martens, who is a Kiwi that made her way to Italy after falling in love with wine. She actually made wine at Ornellaia for a while. She is the type of natural winemaker I adore: she learned all the Traditional rules before deciding to break them.

Incredibly light, almost rosé-ish (think Bisson Cillegiolo.) strawberries, cherries, pomegranate and blood orange on both the nose and palate. Medium acid, and almost no tannin. This, to me, screams “Sicily” more than it does Nerello, reminding me most of the delicious COS wines. I would definitely guess Sicily blind, but would probably say Frappato or Nero d’Avola.
