TN: 2002 Tatiarra Trademark Shiraz

I don’t own much Australian wine, though I have a couple of cases that I purchased during those heady years (late 90s and early 00s) when RP was doing cartwheels over Veritas, Jasper Hill, etc. I found a lone bottle of this 2002 (I think purchased from Garagiste) in my cellar and was curious to see how its 15.5% ABV would show after nearly two decades. P&P, dark crimson without any bricking, a bit reticent nose with plummy fruit and perhaps a hint of dusty tannins. On the palate there was decent fruit but pretty one-dimensional and a bit syrupy on the finish. The alcohol didn’t dominate, but after a glass my curiosity had been satisfied and I had no desire to pour a second! Though not unpleasant, this wine reminds me of why I avoid high-fruit, high-alcohol wines, even with plenty of bottle age.
