TN: 2013 Creation Wines Pinot Noir Reserve

  • 2013 Creation Wines Pinot Noir Reserve - South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley (7/21/2020)
Setting the scene: I was in Cape Town about 2 years ago and we were all high on the Hamilton Russell PN’s from the Hemel and Aarde Valley. An extraordinary wine from a great producer. But when I mentioned this to a local work friend, Franke, he said “tomorrow, I’ll bring you something even better from my cellar”. And what he came with was the 2013 Creation, also from the H-a-A Valley. Slightly bricking in color, it’s the first PN I’ve had in a while. Excellent, red-fruity nose. There’s a developed, mature mouthfeel on the palate. A hint of closed bottle funk that would go away if I just decanted a bit longer. Certainly on the bigger side for a PN. Great acidity, still, and although I can see it probably should be drunk within the next 5 years, this is in no way tired. A great wine. Thank you Franke. (93 pts.)

Funny, the cork said 2013, but the label says 2014. Ooops.
