2019 Mercouri Estate ‘Foloi’, Peloponnese, Greece

I’ve been a fan of their red forever, first time I’ve seen a white, very pleased to make the acquaintance.

Very pale straw color. The aromas are distinctly floral and smoky, with a hint of lemon underneath. There is a touch of trapped CO2, not at all unwelcome. The floral element is in the palate forefront (cactus flower and rose), there is fine intensity of flavor and fine balance. The hint of smoke is in the background. This is lovely and distinctive, with excellent lift and vivacity. There is enough body as it warms in the glass to let you know this is Real Wine. My guess is that yields are pretty low.

This is mostly Roditis (a pink grape), with 10% Viognier. This is distinctive and a very pleasant surprise. Rated 90. Much as I like ageing white wine, that ain’t happening here. Drink up. This was a singleton, I’ll get 3 or 6 more and they’ll be gone by year’s end. This is worth looking for!
