TN: 2004 Dönnhoff Norheimer Dellchen Riesling Spätlese (Germany, Nahe)

  • 2004 Dönnhoff Norheimer Dellchen Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Nahe (6/27/2020)
Interesting wine, in that it has a vanilla cream element that reminds me very much of Wehlener Sonnenuhr, but it still shows the Nahe fruit salad elements as well. There’s the barest hint of honey on the palate, and ample, but balanced acidity. It’s a bit lacking in presence/sustain, so not a remarkable wine, but one that states its case in a quiet voice. Unexpected for a Dellchen wine, as that site tends towards the brash and stern, but a pleasant quaff with room for development.

Thanks, David.
Last week we had the Donnhoff 2004 Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Spatlese. Liked it, but nothing special. Rich fruit but seemed soft. (I like the “Nahe fruit salad” phrase.) I’m looking forward to trying the 2005 version soon, hoping for a bit more acidity.

2004 is a higher acid vintage than 2005. I am wondering if the 2004s are just going through a phase.

I opened a 375 of NH Auslese a few weeks ago which was spectacular.

The 2004 Hermannshohle Auslese has been amazing for a long time.

Opened a 2002 donnhoff niederhauser spatlese

Deep golden yellow

Baked apples, lime zest, creme brûlée, spearmint and a hunt of dill

Savory long balanced beauty

Many ages ago wars raged over whether donnhoff could age. Absolutely

It’s more a study in balance and texture over energy and Intricacy

It’s truly beautiful

now rainwater and wet slate. very savory wine.

Not much of a war when one side fights with blanks.

neutral party here.

i definitely appreciate how nahe and mosel evolve to different beasts.

my case of 2002 donnhoffs have always been a joy

happy 4th!!!
