Ahhh...the old teenage drinkin game! hitsfan But lets make this PG...and about wine only! I know there are probably thousands of wines that you could say that you HAVE NEVER had...but just list a few that kind of surprises you at your stage of wine drinking...that you HAVE NEVER had? And if YOU HAVE...then DRINK! [drinkers.gif]

I have never....had

Petrus
Krug CdM,CdA, Rose'
Rousseau Chambertin
Scarecrow
Henri Jayer
SQN Next of Kyn
Dry wine older than 1941

Now...your turn! [cheers.gif]
Meursault-head!

Never have I ever had a SQN, Pride, Bryant Family, "insert CA big-point expensive Parkerized wine here" that I felt was worth the money. Nor worth $25 if I had to drink the wine.

I have never had anything on your list either, except Scarecrow, which is, sadly and despite the obvious generosity of those who shared it with me (on two separate occasions, if memory serves), not my preferred style of wine. Given what has become of the pricing on these, though, I can't declare that my lack of having had any of them is surprising. Nothing comes to mind that I'm surprised I've never had. Maybe Heitz Martha's. There's one that I don't think I've ever had, that I'd think I would have by now.

It is sad that there was a time that pretty much any oenophile could expect to have all or most of "THE" great wines at least once, by saving some shekels, going in with a group, etc., but that those days are in the past, and the ability for normal folks to try thinks like DRC RC or Petrus, even if just once, as part of their vinous education, is gone. Then again, it is fantastic that there's more great wine out there than ever before.

Hmm, unlike Buzz's list, I think I've had everything on your list. Maybe not Yellowtail, I can't remember. My SiL likes to make mimosas with Barefoot moscato and OJ, which is a perfectly passable brunch beverage when at her house. Bonny Doon Big House Red used to come in a box (I think) and was a fine weekday quaff for the budget-minded. And I'm sure I've put ice in something at least once, when circumstances dictated, rare as that may be. Maybe one of those Barefoot mimosas.

I have never had:

Lafite/Latour/Margaux/Mouton (and a lesser vintage of HautBrion once)
Petrus
Cheval Blanc
Salon/vintage Krug/Bolly VVF
Yquem
DRC/Rousseau/Ponsot (and a Leroy only once, a premoxed St. Aubin white)
Montrachet from any producer
Conterno/Giacosa/Gaja Barolo or Barbaresco
Sassacaia/Ornellaia/Tignanello
Screagle/Harlan/Scarecrow/most other cult Napa cabs
Chave, Juge, Beaucastel, Rayas or Tempier

Really, I've never had most of the high-priced stuff regarded as the "ultimate" in the wine world. Despite all that I feel like I've had a pretty awesome time drinking a lot of great wine over the years. I can live with that.

Dry wine older than 1971
Sweet wine older than 1976
Madeira or sherry

Oddly in my 4ish years of drinking wine I’ve had all of those except a wine older than 1941.

I’ve never had DRC or Screagle though.

The wine with an ice cube one is interesting...a year ago on a very very warm day I ordered a glass of rose at an outdoor bar at a moderately nice place nearby...without asking, bartender goes “oh, this is a little warm”, drops 3 ice cubes in, and walks away...wasn’t really sure how to respond

Romanee Conti. I have had all the first growths, every other Grand Cru Burgundy and several wines from DRC, but not the big boy.

I could name a number of California cults and other things I have not tried, but this is the only wine I really care about that I have not tried.

Mine, not much different from a lot of the group:

Had a first growth
Had screagle/scarecrow/blah blah blah (not particularly worried about this one)
Had any DRC/Chambertin/“top-end” (in price) Burgundy
Had Bordeaux older than 1982
Had Barolo/Barbaresco older the 1954
Had Madeira from the 1800’s
Had 30+ year old champagne (top of the list of the ones listed that I need to check off)
Bought a full case of a single wine

2015 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Blanc de Noirs La Presle (#1)
1954 Fontanafredda Barbaresco
2015 Ultramarine BdB

2019 WsOTY:

Lots of truth there! At Bern’s I’ve had quite a few wines between 1916 and 1926, plus some DRCs old and young. Madiera dating back to the Civil War. Port over 100 years old. D’Yquem from the 1930s. Etc. It was like a goldmine before. Not the same now but still quite fun.

Had many of the wines listed upstream, but the two that I have not had of the big boys wines, but which are on my short list to take down, are:

Gentaz, Cotie Rotie

Le Pin, Pomerol.

My business partner and I are winding down a side-business that has failed and we have joked about taking the last few grand in the account to buy a Le Pin. Funny enough, we kicked-started the business in Tampa About 7 years ago, and celebrated at Bern’s with a 1947 Haut Bailly and a 1961 Pavie. That was a killer night.

I have not had Jayer.

Petrus is Petrus. It’s sensational. The First Growth are Firsts for a reason, and they normally shine that way, as does Ausone and Cheval Blanc. I’ve had sensational bottles of most of these, including some Ausones from the 1950s, and rarely had I had a dud. Even in so-called off-years, I had a great 1973 Latour recently, and for my birthyear, a 1965 Mouton that was lovely, and it came from a shitty year1. They are Firsts for a reason.

I’ve had lots of Cults. Can’t say that I chase them at all. They are always interesting to drink, but never move me like the special Bordeaux above. Not even Screagle or Harlan.

Some wines that really move me are distinct and quirky. Juge is that. It’s a unicorn now, and I’m lucky to have stumbled on it before the run-up, but if you can find it, it’s worth every penny of what you will pay today. It’s singular.

Ok now for my real list, though because I haven't had many wines I'm using broad categories. I HAVE NEVER had...

A corked bottle I have personally purchased
A Bordeaux first growth
Grand cru Burgundy
A 100 point wine (by any reviewer)
Dry wine older than 1971
Sweet wine older than 1976
Madeira or sherry
Let me know if your in or near Chicago post COVID and we will take care of many off that list.
You are going to give him a corked wine? How will you make him pay for it. [snort.gif]
I’ll give him a corked first growth prior to 1971 that was rated 100 points. Knocking 4 off the list at once. But .... I’ll bring a back up. :)

I guess you're not the master of your domain(e).
More like I am the master of my wine universe. Other than the virtually unobtainable (e.g, DRC RC) I have been privileged to try just about anything I can think of.

One trip to a certain steakhouse in Tampa and you can knock the last three off that list in one fell swoop, and without undue expense.

Gentaz Cotie Rotie

Le Pin, Pomerol.

My business partner and I are winding down a side-business that has failed and we have joked about taking the last few grand in the account to buy a Le Pin. Funny enough, we kicked-started the business in Tampa About 7 years ago, and celebrated at Bern’s with a 1947 Haut Bailly and a 1961 Pavie. That was a killer night.

I have not had Jayer.
Yeah add Jayer to my list as well.

Just out of curiosity, what does a bottle of Jayer run today?

And can it even be found?

Isn't there a complete vertical of Cros Parantoux, en magnum, on offer at the next Acker Hong Kong auction?

You mentioned Gentaz, one of the few unicorns I actually used to own in (modest) quantity, before they were unicorns. The last bottle I ever opened, I brought to Florida when visiting an old wine board friend in St. Pete while on a college visit tour with my daughter over a decade ago. If only I'd known you then...

I think the biggest issue with jayer these days is authenticity. Followed by provenance. 3rd on the list is availability! 😂😂

I went to Brandeis. Manischewitz and Baron Herzog doesn't come in a bag.

Small world, my sister went to Brandeis and I went to Bentley.

I’ll second (third?) these:

A Bordeaux first growth
Grand cru Burgundy
A 100 point wine (by any reviewer)

Although I have a few 100 pointers in my cellar, thanks to 2015 Brunellos and James Suckling. I think he nailed the 2015 Argentiera at 99 points so hoping he’s just “on” that vintage in Tuscany.

I’ll add that I’ve never had Cristal, and kick myself for missing it at Costco for $200.

This all seems very one-sided. I'm going to have to drink an awful lot. If people keep posting, I shall have to open a fourth bottle!

Never have I ever had

Grand cru Burgundy
First Growth Bordeaux
Any Amarone
Any wine older than 2000

Thankfully, I have 3 out of 4 in the cellar currently, just waiting for the right time to drink them.

Romanee Conti. I have had all the first growths, every other Grand Cru Burgundy and several wines from DRC, but not the big boy.

I could name a number of California cults and other things I have not tried, but this is the only wine I really care about that I have not tried.
I’ve got all DRC knocked off my list(except Batard) thanks to a Beltramo tasting of all the 2008’s. Haven’t had the Monty or RC since.

I have never had:

Latour, Haut-Brion, Petrus, Le Pin, or Cheval Blanc
Bolly VVF, Clos des Goisses, Krug CdM or CdA
Rousseau Chambertin, Henri Jayer, La Tache, or Romanee Conti
Conterno Monfortino or Giacosa "Red Label"
Screagle, Harlan, Bond, or Marcassin
Hommage à Jacques Perrin, Hermitage La Chapelle , Rayas, or Juge

Dry white wine older than 1981 (that was enjoyable)
Dry red wine older than 1950
Dessert wine older than 1946
Madeira older than 1863

Being an elder POS (66), I've had pretty much every European wine mentioned above except Krug CdAmbonnay. The only one that comes to mind that I've never had is Bartolo Mascarello Barolo. Given that I've been drinking/tasting seriously for 40+ years, I might have and just don't remember!

I've never had any of the cult Napa Cabs: SE, Harlan, etc. Can't say I have any desire to try them unless someone opened a bottle.

I've never had '51 or 58 BV Reserve, or '41 Inglenook Cab (I have held a bottle). 60s vintages of those? Plenty.

Regarding the Jayer comments, y'all really don't want to know what I paid for them. I used to own different wines from the 1978-81 vintages. I drank them, none left.

Jayer
DRC Montrachet
Chave Cathelin
Gentaz
Monfortino
Petrus/LePin
Roumier Musigny

I think that’s the obvious list, though I’m sure I’m missing quite a few things. A lot of the Burgundy has been crossed off the list via Paulee dinners (small pours, but at times spectacular ones), and some of the wines I listed I have zero interest in chasing (Petrus, DRC Monty, Cuvee Cathelin). I haven’t had Trollat either, but is that high end enough?

Oh, there’s tons of Napa Cab/GSM stuff that I have zero interest in that I’m missing, but as Peter says in Office Space, “I wouldn’t say I’ve been missing it”.

Some wines that really move me are distinct and quirky. Juge is that. It’s a unicorn now, and I’m lucky to have stumbled on it before the run-up, but if you can find it, it’s worth every penny of what you will pay today. It’s singular.
Robert, you appeared to have misspelled Allemand Sans Soufre. It’s not spelled “Juge”.
