Most bottles of a single wine from one vintage in your cellar

#1 Post by Mark Golodetz » June 3rd, 2020, 6:07 am

Lately I have been on a quest to find VCC 2014; it is now at four cases, the largest single holding in the cellar. Yours?

Definitely 2008 Dom perignon (not sure how much but 15-20 cases), followed by 2008 Cristal and Krug 168, both > 10 cases.

For still wines 17 PYCM BB and 17 HN BR which are our house white and red, respectively.

Looks like 2007 Au Bon Climat Bein Nacido Pinot. I got these at an unbelievable sale at the height of the last financial meltdown, there’s a cellar tracker note that starts out ‘thank you shit economy’ guess they got in on the same deal.

I cannot even fathom this.

My Ridge Monte Bello allocation is six bottles so it would be a tie between the last five or six vintages.

I try to keep at least a case on hand of NV larmandier bernier longitude at all times, sometimes more, that may be cheating since the disgorgement dates vary. I buy it anytime I see it under $45 all-in. I’ll buy a case of Gavin chanin’s bien nacido Chardonnay in 2016/17/18 and expect that to continue.

I don't buy individual wines in quantity very often, and even when I do, quantity means something different to me than to those who've already posted. I do have a case of 2007 R. López de Heredia Rioja Viña Tondonia.

A tie (9 of each):
2018 Prager Zwerithaler Kammergut Grüner Veltliner Smaragd (Wachau)
2018 Prager Wachstum Bodenstein Grüner Veltliner Smaragd (Wachau)

8 of:
2018 Högl Schön Grüner Veltliner Smaragd (Wachau)

Then 6 of each of the following:
2018 Högl Bruck Riesling Smaragd (Wachau)
2017 Prager Wachstum Bodenstein Grüner Veltliner Smaragd (Wachau)
2016 Birgit Eichinger Gaisberg Riesling Reserve (Kamptal)
2017 Acham-Magin Ungeheuer Riesling GG (Pfalz)

BTW: I visit Wachau/Kamptal/Kremstal every year. That might have something to do with it ;)

Rarely do we purchase more than 4 of anything, but we do have 8 of the 1996 Pichon Comtesse and 2013 Ridge Monte Bello.

Does an NV Champagne count? If so then I have over two cases equivalent of Pierre Peters Cuvee Reserve, with 7 magnums included. Counting the magnums singularly then I have 19 bottles, which is still #1 for me. Multiple disgorgements in there, so who knows...

If not, then I still have 13 bottles of 2012 Merkelbach Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese 'Urgluck'. That's down from originally 24, but still tops.

2005 Pichon Baron, little over a case. Few different SQN where I have 12 Syrah or Grenache from a single vintage.

similar thread years ago got the mic drop when Rosania said he had 500 cases of 96 Salon, admittedly 6 bottle cases, but geez . . . 3000 bottles, at that time about $200/b, now close to $1000/b.

I bought them cheap, in the 2009 market crash, for about $250 per bottle. The wine has under-performed equity indices, but I am not complaining.......too much.

I think stocking up top champagne from a good vintage if you can find it at good prices is the way to go, especially 2008 which in some cases had low production. Some people have been reporting retail prices > 200 for 08 Dom now. If you buy 500 cases, you’re probably buying at least a chunk of it for resale which isn’t my goal with wine at all, but certainly you won’t be able to buy it for these prices in a few years and the next Dom release is 2012, I believe, which likely won’t be for a year or two. By then I doubt you’ll find 08 for < 200 a bottle.

NV Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Brut Rosé - not as much as Michael has of 2008 Dom, but pretty close. Two different parcel purchases, so mainly two different disgorgements.

Then it's a jump down to about half that of Francis Boulard Les Murgiers, followed by a number of others in the 3-5 case range.

My very favorite thing about having a cellar is the ability to follow a single wine over time. If a wine is worth buying, it's worth buying at least 6, price and availability permitting. If I love it, then I want a long term relationship with it.
Sort of ITB - my husband imports a small amount of sake and I help out

I think buying Champagne 2008 is a good call, but I like a lot of different styles, so limit myself to two cases of any one. I did buy a lot of NV Roederer based on great QPR.

This is me too. My wine interests/tastes are far too varied to commit to significant quantities of one wine. I typically buy 2-3 bottles of a wine, and if it's something I really love, I might buy 4-8 bottles (or even a case on very rare occasions where I find a truly great wine for a price I can't pass up).

I probably do have a full case quantity a handful of wines (3-4) purchased over the years, with most of the rest being in the 2-4 bottles/wine range.

According to cellartracker, mine is 28 bottles of Robert Michel's 2006 Cornas La Gaynale, though I think that's more like 25 at this stage as I have opened several lately. After that, looks like it's 24 bottles of the 2013 Mugneret Gibourg Vosne. I don't tend to buy much more than a dozen of any single wine and vintage these days though, I just don't have the space or resources really. To my mind, a dozen is a good number to age and follow a wine.

Cool; surprised they made one, I’ll likely pass until 12; I haven’t bought off vintage Dom really, just 02, a handful of 04/06, quite a bit of 09 and lots of 08.

I'm much more a diversity wine guy (omnivinovore), and my larger quantities are mainly the result of buying Scherrer futures by the case. So I have 20 of the 2017 Scherrer OMV zin, for example, and a case of 2013 Scherrer RRV pinot.

Aside from Scherrer futures orders, I have 9 of the 2013 Ridge Geyserville, a wine I targeted mostly to hold for longer term aging.

Then I have 8 bottles each of:

Musar 2004
Lisini Brunello 2010
Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2015
Musar 2008

Again, not really my nature to go super long on one bottle.

Same here, John. I generally buy 3-6 bottles depending on price. I like variety, so wouldn't want multiple cases of most wines, but I guess if you have enough money to where 15 cases of a particular wine still leaves with you enough to buy other wines then it's not a problem [cheers.gif] .

Definitely 2008 Dom perignon (not sure how much but 15-20 cases), followed by 2008 Cristal and Krug 168, both > 10 cases.

For still wines 17 PYCM BB and 17 HN BR which are our house white and red, respectively.
Hey Michael, just curious--do you think of a case here as a 6 pack or a 12 pack? Either way, I agree young champagnes are good to stock up on.

I have a similar composition: generally 08s, 06s, 04s, and 02s of various champagnes and their rose counterparts are all bouncing around between 36 and 120 bottles. On the slightly older side, 96 Taittinger cdc blanc looks surprisingly well stocked at 81 bottles and 7 mags, and 96 dp rose at 68 bottles and 12 mags

For non champagne, 90 Cheval seems to be my biggest holding at 35 bottles

For spirits, 23 bottles of Tesseron Lot 29, which I hope will really age nicely in bottle followed by a motley mixed case of various 1811s. Not the same bottlings though.

Thank you for mentioning this, Marshall. It's the silent point in the background every time the breadth versus depth question comes up, one I've been hesitant to point out myself. So deep breath.....

It is incorrect to assume that either one likes variety, or one buys wine in quantity. That may of course be true for any given individual, with his or her particular constraints. But it isn't at all true in the general sense, or when you turn it around, as in "you must not like variety because you buy cases of one wine." I love variety. Several who have read my recent bi-monthly notes posts have commented on the diversity of what I drink. I also prefer to buy wines I like in quantity. One doesn't preclude the other. I acknowledge, though, that my ability to have both breadth and depth is predicated on the fact that I'm lucky to have plenty of space, and some disposable income - we're not wealthy, but we are approaching 50, have no dependents, have invested conservatively, have two incomes (until recently, grrr....), are both wine collectors, and have only one or two other hobbies. It's much easier to have both diversity and buy in cases when your cellar is 1000 than when it is 100. With every step up in magnitude, this becomes more and more true. Very few of us can pull a Rosania.

I'm always uncomfortable and squeamish about talking cellar size, I keep my CT private etc. I got really angry with a colleague who came to my house for a party, took a video in my cellar, and then shared it around the office. But I also want to correct the notion I have limited tastes, or don't enjoy diversity or variety, just because I am a case purchaser much of the time. I don't sit around drinking the same 5 or 6 wines every month. Take Egly rose, for instance - I posted above that it's my largest holding. We drank 6 bottles of it last year, and only 1 so far in 2020, and we drink pretty much daily.
Sort of ITB - my husband imports a small amount of sake and I help out

12.

That’s a nice selection of older vintages. I haven’t been around as long so don’t have so good of holdings in older vintages. I have a few cases of 164 as well including 12 mags, but that’s mostly it. I only have probably 3-6 bottles of the other older vintages.
