TN: 2010 Donelan Vénus (USA, California, Sonoma County)

This one has substantially matured since I first tried a bottle about 6 years ago. 10 years of age has taken the edge off, reduced the oily bitterness that sometimes affects Roussane, and allowed the 10% Viognier to integrate seamlessly to create a unified whole. Not fruit driven at all. There is an earthy, meaty flavor to it with a long very smooth, almost velvety finish finish. It is very difficult for me to describe a wine that is both smooth and velvety on one hand but meaty and surely with real substance on the other hand.

In a funny way, I think if the dark side of the force had a really good wine to go with it, it would be something like this. Nothing fruity or floral, bone dry, with a bit of acidity, but not enough to be sharp. If a Riesling Kabinett feels very light in the mouth, this is the opposite. Went very well with seared tuna, roasted broccoli and spaghetti squash with the lemon artichoke pesto. (91 pts.)
