Pontet-Canet 2019 is out - but couldn't find any review?

Hi,

I saw some offers for Pontet Canet 2019 today, but couldn’t find any review… Did one of you taste it? Calling Jeff Leve

68 euros (excl. tax) vs. 98 in 2018 and last vintage of Jean-Michel Comme. Pleasant surprise in terms of pricing, might lead to some selective buying on my part.

edit : also, seems that it’s 13.5% ABV [cheers.gif]

Liv-Ex has some details

Wow. Im not a buyer these days of Bordeaux, especially not en premieur but this is both 1990’s pricing and alcohol levels!

The -33% price vs a year ago is about what is needed to make the 2019 campaign a success for 4 reasons:

  1. There is excess supply of great wines in all channels (and at the wineries from the 2015-2018 vintages),
  2. The 2016-2018 vintages were priced in a way, that destroy the En Primeur system in the long run as shown by the price performance since release (2018: +3%, 2017: -15%, 2016: flat),
  3. The economic situation is dire globally, so a lower price is needed,
  4. The quality seems lower than I 2018/2016 (and probably also slightly below 2015) but clearly above 2017.

Quarin’s Pontet Canet Ratings:
2019: 96
2018: 98
2017: 94
2016: 97
2015: 95
2010: 96
2009: 95

Suckling’s Pontet Canet Ratings:
2019: 98-99
2018: 97-98
2017: 96
2016: 97
2015: 98
2010: 100
2009: 98

Hopefully this 30% decrease will carry over to my normal must buys.

2000 Pontet Canet was around $30 EP, I believe.

Ok, so inflation adjusted.

From my records:

2000 was $34.99 EP
2001 was $29.99 EP
2003 was $49.99 EP
2004 was $42.99 EP

Things started to jump with 2005.

Galloni also published his note (no score). Descriptions like sumptuous, rich, intense and statuesque…and one for John Morris: “layers of dimension.”

It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call … The Twilight Zone.

I can’t see people in the US buying this or any other 2019 EP with the 25% tariff in place. Especially if it is being reported at 13.5% ABV (.5% short of the tariff-free 14.0% ABV level).

More like 2012 pricing I think.
Still, this is a wine that is usually widely available when the bottles are released (in Europe in any case) so maybe not a must buy in Primeurs if everyone is going to follow the -30/-40% trend. Chateaux might not have a choice this time…

$50 in 2003, $72 for 2019 doesn’t strike me as terrible. Especially as it has become a critic darling in the intervening years.

I see I paid $69 for the 2008, on May 6th 2009. Helluva deal I told myself at the time, global financial crisis be damned. A warning of caution in 2020, as I am still waiting on Premier Cru to deliver! I am fearful that there will be many more wine businesses that go under and will ultimately not deliver futures purchased now. The real question to ask yourself, what do you think the '19 Pontet Canet will sell for in the fall of 2021, when it is in bottle?

Not at all unreasonable. Makes me somewhat interested in pricing for wines normally in the next lower echelon of pricing. Might be some very attractive options for very good wines.

Attractive price. Vinfoilio is pricing 375ml at $45. Wonder what the rest of BDX will be priced at.

Pleasantly surprised by the pricing. Hopefully the rest of the campaign follows the trend, or goes even lower.

Good chance too that tariffs are no longer in place by the time they land.

To my shame  the '06 Pontet Canet was my favourite in a blind line up of '06s not that long ago. I think I had misidentified all but 1 wine. On that basis, I could well be a buyer at reasonable pricing.

20% up charge for 1/2 bottles is a definite no-go.
