TN: 2003 Martin Müllen Kröver Steffensberg Riesling Auslese

Pungent petrol, white smoke, fresh-cut garden herbs, greengage, and white peach on the nose overlay hauntingly beautiful tones of slate minerality. The palate is lean and has more fruit presence than herbal notes, with white peach, canteloupe, mandarin orange, and nectarine. There is a nice clean purity of fruit, no detectable botrytis. It is a little hollow in the mid-palate and light in acidity, though the fruit finish lingers nicely.

I haven’t had many 2003 rieslings, but assume Martin did what he could given the difficult vintage. This auslese feels like it’s just starting to reach maturity. (92 pts.)
