TN: 2016 Tokara Director’s Reserve White

I’m usually a fan of South African whites but this didn’t do it for me.

This is a 70/30 Sauvignon Blanc & Semillon blend that seems to be stuck between the New & Old Worlds. It’s well made, but the 30% new oak combined with the grapefruit/lime/tropical quality of the fruit seems at odds and not entirely harmonious. It’s clearly well made but seems somewhat flat overall; just seems to lack energy and complexity. Slightly warm on the finish. There is a nice stony tilt to the nose. Ultimately, it’s hard to see the value here at ~$35 CAD. I’d be curious to see what this looks like a few years down the road to see if it knits together a bit, but as it stands it’s a pass.
