Rough note; '02 Bergstrom Willamette Pinot

Poured very slight brown around the edges with translucency of an aged wine.
For the first 45 minutes I was in heaven-wishing I had put away a case.
An absolute intoxicating cloud of pleasurable earthy brambly wet stones and raspberry mixed with strawberry.
Mouth coating flavors that lacked grip but a long finish.
Then it began to slowly but steadily collapse. My second glass from Grassl Cru had slightly muted aromatics and the palate impression went from lush to acidic.
The acidity kept rising and the fruit kept fading. The aromatics that were so amazing earlier retreated to just OK.
This was like a hot air balloon rising fifty feet, descending, and then deflating on the ground.
Or maybe it was like the wicked witch melting before Dorothy’s eyes.
Would likely have been at peak 5-7 years ago.

Thanks for the note. Interesting trajectory. Sorry to hear it couldn’t keep it together.

That must have been among his first few vintages. I’ve been told about style changes over the years but don’t know any details. Not usually a buyer, although I’ve got a 2012 downstairs somewhere.
