TN: 2017 JF Fichet Bourgogne Rouge

Tried a bottle tonight and was very impressed. Blind this was in all respects a young and very good Volnay village level wine from an excellent vintage. Pure fruit, admirable concentration, yet weightless and no rusticity to be found. And $25 a bottle!!

Having tried and really loved his whites, although not as frequently as I would like(!), this was my first foray into his rouge. This punches way above its weight class. Should come as no surprise, given what he does with his village level merseaults.

The back story is that he has two plots of pinot vines in Merseault from like 1953 and 1966 or so, but they can only be classified as bourgogne rouge. The vines are very close to Volnay Santenots. So he blends them, labels them as bourgogne, and sells them for a song.

Does anyone have any experience with aging this wine a few years? It acts like it should be enjoyed young, but with those old vines I’m tempted to lose a few in the cellar.
