FedEx Just Delivered Wine and .....

#1 Post by Bdklein » March 25th, 2020, 9:15 am

Didn’t require a signature. But driver said (from a distance ) that if an adult didn’t come to the door that he wouldn’t have left the package .

I would, and have, reported this to FedEx. Too many possible negatives can come from that practice.

FedEx delivery for me this morning. Verified he saw me then talked through the door that I was ok with him leaving it outside (which I grabbed moments later)

FedEx deliveries redirected to Walgreens. Business as usual there. Scary. I put gloves on to sign.

They are still required to verify they are delivering to an “of age” person. They just don’t get the signature.

I'll trade these FedEx stories for a 'proper' GSO home delivery story.

Yesterday, the GSO delivery lady rang my doorbell and was quite protective over my wine shipment. After asking if I was expecting a package, she then asked me to confirm my name and spell it, then asked for my date of birth, along with what number of month it was. Afterwards, she slowly gave me the package (I basically had to reach for it). I almost wanted to grab my ID to appease her.

A weird experience, but if they shipped my future bottles with that kind of verve, I'd feel pretty good. [wow.gif]

Hm, I have 3 FedEx wine deliveries scheduled for today and there's no way I'm opening the door and getting within 6 feet of the driver. Normally, I'll meet them on the driveway since my dogs aren't fond of strangers (and delivery people seem to hope that the front door doesn't open when they're standing in front of it). We'll see what happens.

GSO asked me to sign. Did so reluctantly and washed hands immediately. Getting a Fedx and UPS in next two days. Whoever does not ask for signature will be my future company of choice! Come on, these are difficult times-companies need to adjust.

I have had the same driver for a long time now, and he is terrific, especially around the time of Falltacular each year.

When he arrives and I answer the door, he's been letting me waive off on signature, as why would you compel someone now to touch a shared surface? Just another reason why I appreciate him.

Sure, provided you remember. What if the object has virus on it, you use it, and then for some bad fortune, you forget to wash up and instead touch your eyes or face? Right now, I'm not taking any chances.

Yeah, all of us Frank. We all gotta do our part. It was Vincent wine here as well. My first try with those. Probably overkill but I let any package sit for a day or so just in case before I handle it more.

Tomorrow looks to be our once a week trip to the grocery. Those trips are kindof depressing to see how people hoard for themselves with little thought for anyone else. We have the basics but our son at college had and could find zero TP so we mailed some. We have not seen any fresh beef or chicken in the last two trips locally. I planned to make some fried chicken but that'll have to wait. Substitution is fine and my wife is a great cook so we are generally well stocked, well provisioned, and quite used to cooking in.

There is a good article in today's WSJ about the drivers.
They tend to be underpaid with no bennies. And yet they are expected to do their job in this crisis, subjecting themselves to becoming ill with no health insurance.

FedEx just delivered a wine shipment to my house about an hour ago. They left the packages in front of my door and waited in the driveway. I went out to get it and he gave me a thumbs up and I waved back and that was that. No signature required from me. Not sure what would have happened though if I didn't come out to open my door.

This is a tough situation. I know many who have never had to sign for alcohol because 'they know their drivers'. Totally illegal.

Bottom line - with the current situation, they should be confirming someone 'of age' is there but it is not necessary to sign for things. But they should not just be dropping it off without making sure someone is there who should sign for it.

For those of you who never sign for it - what is your recourse should a package gets taken without you knowing?

Cheers

FedEx made me sign today. He seemed frustrated that he had to wait for me to put a glove on. But I’d be frustrated if I had to be out delivering wine to people. I just wish all wineries would just hold it but I understand that may not be a viable alternative either.

What negatives?

UPS last week rang doorbell, confirmed I was the recipient and left package on steps (he could see me through door). Really that should be enough even without COVID for alcohol - the signature requirement is an unnecessary obligation foisted on UPS/FedEx by distributors who want protection from competition and the mothers temperance union (aka MADD).

It's a difficult situation. There are laws about delivering to people of age. So drivers not wanting to get dinged is completely understandable. Plus, I get annoyed if I don't at least get a knock on the door when someone drops a package. Porch thiefs are real.

It's wine after all. We joke about "essentials" but it isn't. But then wineries are probably not going to want to sit warehouse their product for you.

Adapt. Make the best of the situation. The drivers are at risk just like you are.

On a related note, those getting Door Dash deliveries, I couldn't fathom having some random person make my food, another person packaging it, another person driving and delivering to me, then eating said food. SKETCHY!!! IMO, this is a contributor to so many people in high density areas like NYC are getting the virus in such an alarming rate...!

I've done a fair amount of research into this and the risk here is very low. The food isn't a problem (esp if you reheat it); the risk, to the extent one exists, is in the packaging. I take the food out of the delivery containers (wearing disposable gloves), throw the packaging and gloves away (with care), wipe potentially contaminated surfaces down, reheat the food. Easy peasy.

Just seems totally sketchy. Person making your food may be healthy but can unknowingly pass on the virus as it sits on nice warm food (perfect environment). The risk reward for me isn't worth it, but for those who can't buy groceries and make a meal, this may be your only option. Keep clean!!!

Hmmm. Maybe you could tutor me on how to buy groceries and cook a meal? Because obviously only someone incapable of doing those things would order take out.

I am concerned about the ongoing viability of the restaurants and small businesses in the community, so I consulted the views of, you know, actual virologists, communicable disease experts, and public health professionals. But maybe those who can't do that research and who don't care about those local businesses might not use that "option."

Same issues with groceries. The guy who racked the produce or stocked the shelves could have C-19. WASH YOUR HANDS! I don’t wear gloves, because I can’t figure out the advantage if you WASH YOUR HANDS

I would, and have, reported this to FedEx. Too many possible negatives can come from that practice.

Drivers are busting their tail right now under crazy conditions and literally risking their lives so people can get what they need / want. This is the exact opposite time I'd rat out a driver for not getting a signature.

To each their own, but I just don’t get your logic if there was a verbal/visual acknowledgment of the delivery .

Neal, I wasn't insinuating you don't know how to buy groceries or cook. As one who drinks vintage Bordeaux, I'm highly confident you know how to cook a meal. I was stating that those who can't buy groceries for various reasons nor have the means to cook a meal only have an option of Door Dash. [truce.gif] I'm sure those in the profession of virology, communicable disease and public health pro's would agree that buying your own food and cooking it is less risk than a restaurant cooking your food and someone else delivering it. Nonetheless, safety be with you and hope we all get out of this healthy [cheers.gif]

Fedex driver dropped the boxes at the door, left when he saw me open the door.

Fedex came by, I started walking toward the truck, and he split before I could approach. "Delivery exception - delivery requires signature from an adult." He didn't even get out of the truck. Oh well - weird times, can't complain, and I'll be here tomorrow of course.

We've used Door Dash for the last 5 days to support our local restaurants. Five different drivers and every one of them had gloves on. So did we. Got two deliveries of cigars and three deliveries of wine. Wearing gloves, we've sprayed and wiped the boxes with alcohol, removed the contents and discarded the packaging boxes. Had to sign for one wine delivery but none of the UPS or Door Dash deliveries.
