TN: 2017 Tement Sauvignon Blanc Grosse Lage STK Zieregg

This is golden yellow in the glass with a creamy note (maybe there is some time on the lees?) that leads to lemon, green banana, and chalk on the nose. The palate is medium-full bodied, but framed with an elegance and poise that is quite striking. Notes of lemon, candied ginger, and white grapefruit linger on the palate. This is lovely and certainly worth the cost of admission. This could be interesting to check in on over time, and I don’t think this is fully peaked yet.

A so called cult wine and pretty expensive.

I think I paid about what I usually paid for the single-vineyard Sancerre’s that I buy. Not as affordable as NZ Sauvignon Blanc, but nowhere near as expensive as say…Dagueneau or Vatan. This will definitely be a repeat buy for me…if i can find it again.

Not familiar with this producer, Kirk. Importer??
Wish more Sudstiermark wines were available in the USofA.

About 2 decades ago I got a bottle of their basic bottling when Spago Palo Alto blew out some excess wine inventory with a massive employee discount. That wine was mighty impressive and distinct from other other regions, so set a benchmark for me, and also served to alert me how good Austrian wines could be. In those days long before wine-searcher I only found one subsequent bottle of there’s.

Tom the importer of this was SM Imports, from Oakland, CA. I bought them from JJ Buckley, Geoffrey Binder is my buyer with this company and he’s amazing.

Just had the 2013 vintage of this wine - wasn’t impressed as you Kirk but can see the appeal. Very distinct wine and definitely am glad I tried it!

Quite a singular wine. Very aromatic, lots of tropical fruits such as lychee and guava. Someone called this a gewurtz which was a pretty good guess. On the palate it was elegant with a light textural feel that I only find in wines of good quality. Only thing that it was surprisingly big and ripe, which was saved by an excellent spine. Overall a wine that I admired more than liked.
