TN: 2001 J.K. Carriere Willamette PN

You don’t see many TN’s on JK Carriere, let alone 19 year old bottles, so I figured I would throw one up.
Poured brick red. Stayed that way. Almost transparent at edges. Started out with old red funk which quickly blew off.
Sassafras, cinnamon, sage, white pepper, and underbrush. The kind of olfactories that tingle the receptors.
No overt fruit, all tertiary. There is still tannin. Rather than caressing the tongue, it hugs the tongue like a warm blanket.
Not terribly complex or layered, and yet the finish is persistent.
To channel Dan Kravitz, I’d rate it an 89.37, with an extra point included for being spry. As in “is granny spry?”

Wow! I was there a couple years ago. They had been saving their 2007s because the initial reports were that it was a questionable vintage. Glad they did!

Funny, I popped the 2013 last night. Didn’t care for it; maybe it is just the vintage. I’ll try Day 2 tonight. Not a lot of buzz on this winery but it is well thought of in Oregon, at least by the people I’ve visited with. Maybe some Oregon folks could chime in.
