Rivers-Marie 100pts

#1 Post by B. Buzzini » January 13th, 2020, 11:43 am

AG just gave the 2018 Platt Pinot Noir a trippie diggie! "...The 2018 Pinot Noir Platt Vineyard is the single greatest Pinot I have ever tasted from Rivers-Marie. Rich, deep and explosive in its beauty, the 2018 is an arresting, breathtaking wine that takes hold of all the senses and never lets up. Inky dark fruit, spice, licorice and lavender infuse the 2018 with tremendous textural richness, and yet there is no feeling of excess weight. A Pinot of dizzying intensity and richness, the Platt has so much to give and so much to offer. Readers who can find it should not hesitate, as it is truly magnificent. In a word: epic!..."

Congrats RM team! [cheers.gif]

Very nice! Going to have to max out my allocation.

2018 is a hallmark vintage for wine in California. Should be great scores across the board.

Best scores ever for RM Pinots. Glad I'm on the mailing list. Offer is due anytime now.

Buzz-worthy (just subtract 5?)

I feel about this like I felt about his giving a 100 points to the Pax Sonoma Hillside. It's just weird: I find it hard to believe that it is standard deviations better than the other wines in the set. I don't doubt that it's good, but it's out of the range of the other wines, which still got very good scores (93-96 points).

FWIW, my close friend who is in production under the R-M umbrella has been telling me for months now that I need to come visit and taste the 2018 Platt PN as it was one of the best PNs he's ever had, so it's not just Galloni who feels this way about this wine. Congrats on the well-deserved honor to the R-M team.

Honestly, the 2017 RM Platt PN blew me away. Was going to purchase the 2018 anyways, but this is just the cherry on top.

Last year it was the third Tuesday in January, but that happened to be the 15th. This year the third Tuesday is the 21st.

Edit: In another thread, William Segui confirmed it is the third Tuesday.

Congrats to to the R-M crew!!!

Although my palate could be changing, I have to say I'm much more a fan of the R-M Pinots from recent vintages vs. earlier - have been buying more than ever before. Same with the Chards, they've just been awesome over the past 5-6 vintages or so.

Selfishly, I wish the allocations rewarded long term buyers. I am 10 + years ordering every cycle and will get the same small non-guaranteed allocation as someone who just made the list this year. I know there is no perfect system, so mostly I'm just bummed when stories like these break. I hate the idea I could miss a tiny production wine like this because I might not be able to get my order in within 15 minutes or so before it sells out.

Actually, I think that Rhys has a pretty perfect system. Everyone on the list gets a guaranteed allocation (specific wines and # of bottles are dependant on prior purchasing patterns), and have like 10-days to purchase their allocation, and Rhys sends out reminder emails 2 or 3 times during that 10-day period. You can also wish-list specific wines. Then whatever isn't purchased during the 10-day period is offered to others on the list. To me, this is a much fairer system than many wineries use, because someone at work or on a plane is at a dissadvantage to someone who is able to check their email every 5-minutes. I get that RM pre-announces when their wines will be released to the mailing list, but still, it doesn't seem fair to many people on their list........

Not to take away from RM because their stuff is fantastic but the Wayfarer scores were impressive for how small the range is.

Another year I'll be maxing the allocation. What a shame...

I have a feeling the 18's are going to light up the scoreboards for a lot of the board sweetheart labels.

I totally agree, been buying since the '07 vintage and it's always a bummer when certain wines sell out before I'm free to go online and purchase.

But c'est la vie...because either way, I'm happy and R-M only makes me happier.

No crap. Next to the Wayfarer and Cobb scores, the RM seems almost paltry, other than the 100-pointer.

I’m fine with AG. I have a coupe of these RM from ‘17 but haven’t tried yet so will have to open one or take a Coravin glass in the next week before the ‘18 is released

‘16 Hillside Select also got a hundo. I tried that one at the vineyard and it was definitely very good.

Wayfarer sounds interesting too might have to give them a try. Quite the range of Pinot Noirs in their lineup.

Thanks for posting and congrats to the RM team - it is quite an accomplishment to receive this score for sure.

My comment above had more to do with the sheer number of 100 point scores we've seen from different reviewers over the past decade - and the interesting 'responses' those have on this board to high scores based on producer. None of this is meant to discount the achievements that TRB and his staff have achieved . . .

Cheers.

There's definitely been a glutton of 100 point scores in the past decade, but we've also had probably the best continuous run of growing seasons that Napa/Sonoma have ever had. Its a compliment to the farming and wine making that there's been so many great wines.

I agree that wines in general are 'getting better all the time' due to many things, including lots of modern science. Many would argue that 'growing conditions' are not necessarily 'better' than in the past - we have more 'tools' to deal with a variety of issues these days.

I have no opinion on the Rivers Marie in particular. But, here is some data.

Between Friday and Monday, AG posted approximately 750 reviews on Napa and Sonoma. Of those, by my count 6 received outright 100 point scores, and one more received a 98-100 point range. So, a little less than 1% of reviews got 100 points. And, most of the wines reviewed are pretty high-end, not grocery-store plonk. In my opinion, not really an over-abundance of 100 point scores.

Totally fair to critique whether a wine deserves 100 points or not (that is 1/2 the fun of this, isn't it?). But I don't think it is fair to suggest that 100 points (from that reviewer, at least) are being handed out all over the place, hence cheapening the achievement.

From the save the date email:

"With the 2017 vintage (January 2019 release), we introduced the Platt Vineyard Pinot Noir to our lineup. We were thrilled to get the fruit and based on the reaction to the bottling, we weren’t alone. Given the size of the block and the impossibly low yields, it became obvious that we were going to have to change the way we offered this wine to you, our direct mailing list customers. Starting this release, we will be offering one bottle of Platt Pinot Noir to as many folks as we can. Non-allocated customers will have the ability to wish for a bottle if they want and we will do our best to honor as many requests as possible."

I won't be offered a Platt just a wish list. Dang! On a really good note I have lots of bottles allocated (24) from RM with some of my favorites so not disappointed at all :) The best bang for your buck pinot in my opinion, the Sonoma Coast is in there so I will drink those up first!! Cheers to RM success!

I won't be offered a Platt just a wish list. Dang! On a really good note I have lots of bottles allocated (24) from RM with some of my favorites so not disappointed at all :) The best bang for your buck pinot in my opinion, the Sonoma Coast is in there so I will drink those up first!! Cheers to RM success!
i think this is just the generic email you will have to wait for your actual offer. for R-M I have been offered different stuff then there email

Very nice! Going to have to max out my allocation.

2018 is a hallmark vintage for wine in California. Should be great scores across the board.
That would be 1 bottle

There's definitely been a glutton of 100 point scores in the past decade, but we've also had probably the best continuous run of growing seasons that Napa/Sonoma have ever had. Its a compliment to the farming and wine making that there's been so many great wines.
In the spirit of being a Berserker, I need to correct you mate.

"There's definitely been a glut of 100 point scores....." not ".... been a glutton of 100 point scores....".

Glut: an abundance
Glutton: an overindulging person

There could be a glutton of 100pt wines - hell there are probably several of them on this board

The PNs have been hit or miss for me. I think they’re better with a little age on them, say 7+ years from vintage. I’ve had a few that have rocked my world and then some that I found overly sweet with a persistent hint of orange peel. They’re definitely crowd pleasers on the lower end. Not sure I can tell much difference with their higher priced bottles. I’ll have to think this one over as I’ve really steered away from Cali wines and Pinot in general.

My Save the Date doesn't have any writeup, just a list of bottlings and allocations. Weird. (I did get allocated a bottle of Platt, tho, so not complaining.)

Mind posting the rest?

Oh I will absolutely take the 1 if that is what is offered. The fine print did say they would offer to as many customers as possible. Sounds like they may not have enough for the entire mailing list. We will find out on Tuesday. Hopefully I get 1 to add to the cellar. These are great additions to any collection.

I've already started backfilling 2017 vintages of RM Platt at local stores. Hopeful to get allocated 1 bottle, even though wasn't listed explicitly in the email.

For someone who's never tasted RM, what are the highlights of this release aside from the 100 pointer which I won't be allocated anyway?
