Lacklustre ‘05 DP; Nice ‘98 Pommard 1er Cru.

Quiet, relaxed dinner last night, Sunday the 29th December 2019) at Terry’s Bistro with the wife & 3 boys.

My first time to try the 2005 Dom Pérignon - Not much by way of liveliness, vibrancy or brightness. Freshness of fruit isn’t great either. Too ripe, a bit flabby really. Lest I be misunderstood, it’s not bad; but, for what it is, as well as its price level, it is quite disappointing. For its price, one can do much better.

Fortunately, I bought only 3 bottles to try out; and, the shared starters were very good. As my eldest said: “It’s a good palate cleanser”.

With some Chuletas de Cordero, a bottle of 1998 François Gaunoux Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Epenots - the second bottle of this I’ve opened in 2 weeks. The first one I didn’t let breath for much, and was a bit too austere, too thin, and the blood/iron/ceps/decay notes were too upfront.

This time, after quickly decanting for sediment at home (stood upright for 3 days prior), I let it breathe in decanter at the restaurant for over 1&1/2 hours. Much, much better. The bouquet virtually perfumed (not an adjective I normally use for Pommard), good heft, the fruit much healthier/fresher, the savory/earthy notes still there; but as subtler accents to the fruit. Very nice alone & with the lamb.

Desserts were our usual Flan de la Abuela (awarded as the best in the Philippines), Tocino del Cielo…

…Chocolate Marquis, and, not in photo, Picatostes con Chocolate which my youngest must always finish up with at Terry’s Bistro.

Cheers to the coming new year, All!

Great notes.
“The boys” aren’t boys anymore! Life zooms by-

Thanks, Craig.

Yes, definitely things have changed. The two older ones are both working now. The youngest is a junior in college, leaving for a semester in the Netherlands next month. Really, trite as it sounds, time really does fly.

Mazel tov Noel, beautiful family photo. it certainly appears to have been a lovely meal despite the Dom.

Those dishes look AMAZING. That flan…yum!

I want Noel to adopt me

Thanks, Glenn. Yes, nice dinner indeed despite that ‘05 DP. It’s not often we can go out to a family dinner complete; so these dinners are a real treat for Catha & I.

Best,

N

Hi, Scott. Yes, everything was good; and the flan was especially good last night. Great balance. Not too rich or thin; not overly sweet.

Hahaha I wonder what advice my children would give you about that wish…

happy new year, Noel. you are truly a blessed man there…

Happy New Year from Alberta!!

Happy New Year Noel!

Unfortunately 2005 is just lackluster in Champagne (at least in my opinion). I have had two other expensive 2005s in the last month, and both fell well short of their typical brand performance and price tags.

Thanks, Jesus. Happy new year🥂

Hi, Bob! Have a great 2020!:clinking_glasses:

Happy new year, David!:clinking_glasses:

I was in Bdx in the summer of ‘05 and tasted many of the “top” producers’ wines (e.g., Margaux, Latour, Mouton, PL, etc.), most of which showed a lot of promise. I thought then that they’d likely need a lot more time than “usual”.

Bordeaux is fantastic. Champagne in 2005 has some “off” notes.

Ah, I see. For some strange reason, I thought you were referring to Bdx in your 2nd sentence - I blame last night’s champagne and whisky.

The subject DP was the first ‘05 champagne I’ve tried (as far as I can recall anyway). From what you say, I’ll likely avoid buying champagne from ‘05 in general. For sure there’s a lot of better stuff to be had.
