Quiet, relaxed dinner last night, Sunday the 29th December 2019) at Terry’s Bistro with the wife & 3 boys.
My first time to try the 2005 Dom Pérignon - Not much by way of liveliness, vibrancy or brightness. Freshness of fruit isn’t great either. Too ripe, a bit flabby really. Lest I be misunderstood, it’s not bad; but, for what it is, as well as its price level, it is quite disappointing. For its price, one can do much better.
Fortunately, I bought only 3 bottles to try out; and, the shared starters were very good. As my eldest said: “It’s a good palate cleanser”.
Montaraz Jamón Ibérico de Bellota cured 36+ months.
Morcilla Ibérico.
Chorizo.
Gambas al Ajillo.
La Catedral Esparragos Blancos.
Cachopitos Asturianos.
Bacalao Crujiente.
Of course, my comfort dish, Tortilla de Patatas.
The 2 younger boys wanted some Fabada.
The wife wanted some Albondigas.
With some Chuletas de Cordero, a bottle of 1998 François Gaunoux Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Epenots - the second bottle of this I’ve opened in 2 weeks. The first one I didn’t let breath for much, and was a bit too austere, too thin, and the blood/iron/ceps/decay notes were too upfront.
This time, after quickly decanting for sediment at home (stood upright for 3 days prior), I let it breathe in decanter at the restaurant for over 1&1/2 hours. Much, much better. The bouquet virtually perfumed (not an adjective I normally use for Pommard), good heft, the fruit much healthier/fresher, the savory/earthy notes still there; but as subtler accents to the fruit. Very nice alone & with the lamb.
Desserts were our usual Flan de la Abuela (awarded as the best in the Philippines), Tocino del Cielo…
…Chocolate Marquis, and, not in photo, Picatostes con Chocolate which my youngest must always finish up with at Terry’s Bistro.
Cheers to the coming new year, All!
¡Salud y pesetas!
