TN: A small holiday gathering

A SMALL HOLIDAY GATHERING - Eddie V’s - Tysons Corner, VA (12/22/2019)

I told my family that there will be no more holiday wine dinners. Then, one of the usual suspects emailed for the real last impromptu holiday wine lunch. Three of us got together at Eddie V to drink a few excellent bottles.
CDC Rose
This bottle which came from the same batch as the previous bottles, was fully mature and incredibly delicious.

  • 2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Rosé Brut - France, Champagne
Copper and gold with only a hint of salmon which clearly reflects close to full maturity. Simply delicious Burgundian nose displaying decadent red fruit with a hint of yellow, strawberry soda, raspberry jam, a hint of lemon curd, smoked salmon, sous bois, cupper, cinnamon and limestone. There is a hint of fully mature Chambolle. Perfectly harmonious palate, generous sweet red fruit, very fine generous mousse, decadent yet precise, energetic and detailed, bright acidity, strong limestone mineral and a long sweet red fruit driven finish with cinnamon and smoke at the end. This seems to be reaching the full maturity which is a bit of surprise but not a bad thing. Simply delicious. (97 pts.)

Comte Lafon
This was the best showing of this wine. Dominique Lafon is making incredible wines since the 09 vintage.

  • 2012 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Very youthful color showing a hint of green. Incredibly energetic yet decadent nose displaying concentrated pure yellow fruit with a hint of white, granny smith, pear, lemon curd, lemon oil, a hint of pineapple, flint, spicy spices and crushed rock. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated yellow citrus and apple fruit, rich and oily yet pure, detailed and energetic, bright acidity, strong mineral and a long succulent yellow fruit driven finish. It is unbelievably concentrated yet pure and energetic. Incredible showing. (98 pts.)

DRC Richebourg
Slightly lean but drank incredibly well.

  • 1995 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Perfectly mature complex DRC nose displaying subtle red and black fruit, blackberry, black cherry, a hint of strawberry, roasted nuts, Vosne spice, licorice, truffle, caramel, cinnamon, coffee, soy, cedar, iron and earth. Perfectly harmonious palate, very finely layered subtle black fruit, silky, fine detail and slightly lean, bright acidity, strong earthy mineral and a long subtle yet decadent black fruit driven finish. The palate is slightly lean but it is drinking perfectly. (97 pts.)

Cote Rotie
I was surprised by how concentrated Jamet was. The La Turque was an incredibly youthful example.

  • 1991 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Incredibly youthful nose displaying intense black fruit, crushed blackberry, black cherry, tapenade, cedar, charred rare steak, fresh porcini, cedar, lander and strong limestone. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of youthful rich black fruit, rich, silky and polished, bright acidity, strong limestone mineral and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish with tapenade and lavender at the end. This particular bottle is incredibly fresh and precise. This will need another decade to fully mature. With air, it gets even richer and more opulent. Excellent showing. (97 pts.)
  • 2004 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie Côte Brune - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Youthful expressive nose displaying concentrated pure black fruit, crushed blackberry, a hint of blackberry liqueur, blueberry pie, a hint of licorice, coffee, tapenade, lavender and crushed rocks. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of intense ripe yet pure blue and black fruit, rich yet silky and detailed, perfect amount of acidity, strong mineral and a long intense black fruit driven finish with tapenade and lavender at the end. It is surprisingly concentrated for the 04 vintage. Although expressive, it remains very youthful and need another decade to reach the full maturity. (94 pts.)

This was a great friends gathering. We had so much fun that the lunch lasted until seven and the restaurant was full with the dinner crowd by the time when we left.

That’s a beautiful note.

It makes me wistful.

Nice notes. How long did you decant/slow ox the 2014 jamet?

Thanks for the notes, this was helpful. I’ve had a number of these recently, so it helps to calibrate scores.

It was actually 2004. Pop and pour.

Nice notes about some real dandies; love the 91 La Turque and happy to know about the 06 Taittinger CdC Rose as I have 3 bottles, but have not explored any, but may open one soon as per your comments.
