This is the musician Drake’s ‘Champagne’. I find it to be more like Mariah Carey’s Champagne attempt with Angel than Ace of Spades. Cattier already had what would become Ace of Spades in the works prior to the Jay-Z deal. They weren’t sure what to do with it or exactly where it would fit in the portfolio (above or below Clos du Moulin), but at least there was some thought at a new, individual wine prior to Jay-Z coming along. Most of the others that have followed Ace of Spades are more just simple re-labels or slight adjustments (like a different dosage) on an already produced wine. All that said, if folks like it and it sells at its price point then more power to them.
Philippe Martin’s own champagnes are pretty good. It’s a small, multi-generational family grower champagne house. We visited there earlier this year and liked the cuvées we tasted (Terre D Antan, Veuve Marguerite Marie, Rose de Saignee).
If anyone wants to try this off the clearance rack. Not sure I can pull the lever even @$50? Almost tempted though…I’ve never known baller status.
