2003 Eaglepoint Ranch Syrah, Copain

I find it challenging to write tasting notes. Last year, Frank Murray encouraged those of us not writing tasting notes to try and this bottle was the inspiration I needed. It was fun to get my friends around the table to chime in.

14.3%

Expressive nose of violets and herbs.

Dark purple with little bricking.

My wife (who has a much better palate and sense of smell than I do) found washed blackberries and leather on the nose. Black cherry, cherry bark, cedar and smoke on the palate. Harmonious balance with nothing out of place. Bold but no heat. Bright acidity brings it all together. Tannin mostly resolved. Flavors continued to change as the wine opened up. 60 second finish.

Held up well and no sense it is going downhill soon though I would guess it is at peak. Very enjoyable. A pleasant surprise. I think I have one more bottle and I will try and drink it in the next few years.
