Who would have thought? Quite a few actually, as this was by no means a blind purchase. Apparently it’s a solid producer through and through and they do Gutedel well among other varieties. I guess I need to investigate further.

2015 Ziereisen Syrah Gestad - Germany, Baden (29.11.2019)
The nose wows with the most attractive and pure, sweet blackberry fruit and notes of iron, wet leaves, black pepper and spices (oak-derived?) reminiscent of the ever approaching Christmas holidays. Aromatic and expressive and just very charming. Medium-bodied on the palate with delightfully juicy fruit, very mellow tannins and lively but not necessarily super high acidity. Definitely on the dry and savory side with a fresh, grippy finish. Flavors are not that different from what one might find in the Northern Rhône but this mostly differentiates itself from those counterpoints by being a featherweight when it comes to structure. That is not to complain however as indeed I find this a very enjoyable expression of the variety and refreshingly different. Not a mind-blowingly captivating wine but then again I don’t have a problem with the price whatsoever. Definitely it succeeds in making me want to try the producer’s more expensive wine(s) from the same variety.
