2016 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco

After the first sip you immediately know this is a magnificent wine and magnificent vintage. Its this BALANCE, peace of mind, structure and depth. In addition despite its youth you already have a remarkable elegance.

Of course I know our wine cellars are full, of course I know that there are many many good wines on the market right now. Anyway......BUY

94/100

Just opened my fifth bottle leaving me 13. I just went back for six more. I thought this was closing but when served at the right temperature, this is quite amazing.

  • 2016 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco (9/11/2019)
Such a pretty wine; balanced and fragrant. Love the electric cranberry-ruby color. Forthcoming classic fruit with poise and grace. Deftly balanced. Love the silkiness this brings. Cool red fruits. Probably the best Normale I have ever sampled. Just....bought....more---again (93 pts.)

No harm in opening, and day 2 it's even better.

IMNHO, this is the best regular bottling release I've had in my life time. Absolutely stunning wine.

Disclaimer- Of course I sell it, doesn't every good store though???

If Produttori is being shipped to Flyover Country, then I ain't seeing it on Free Wine Searcher:

https://www.wine-searcher.com/find/prod ... y/2016/usa

All I'm seeing is CT, NY, NJ, DC, FL, IL, CA, and OR.

That might be an artifact of how Free Wine-Searcher censors results, but it's not encouraging.

If you narrow it down to single-state listings, then GA, VA, MO and TX each have a single listing at $45:

https://www.wine-searcher.com/find/prod ... 016/usa-ga
https://www.wine-searcher.com/find/prod ... 016/usa-va
https://www.wine-searcher.com/find/prod ... 016/usa-mo
https://www.wine-searcher.com/find/prod ... 016/usa-tx

Three hits in WA:

https://www.wine-searcher.com/find/prod ... 016/usa-wa

But nothing in NC, SC, IN, OH, PA, MN, WI, MI, CO, AZ, etc.

Good to do but not necessary. I am using my Coravin right into a small decanter and right into glass.

I've seen it on the shelves here in Minneapolis for about $45. Meanwhile I just had the 2016 Produttori Langhe Nebbiolo which I thought was outstanding.

Yep - they've been on the shelves in the well-heated stores, sometimes in direct sun, in the sun since they hit the market.

Not suggesting to buy, just stating that's whats available in PA. Prices are less than appealing anyway.

BALANCE means when the key elements of a wine are in perfect harmony. Or like I say at tastings or write in TN, "everything is on the right place".

Technically speaking, the key elements of a wine are fruit, acidity, alcohol, tannin and extract.

For me personally, in addition the key elements are structure, depth, freshness, elegance and drinking pleasure. You can also add length, agebility and sensitive oak management etc.

Especially in outstanding vintages like 2016 you taste/feel and understand the word BALANCE, as I drank (not tasted!) several high-ranking wines from Bordeaux and Italy in the last months.

I've tried three bottles so far. I found it a bit disjointed with prominent oak notes for several hours after opening in each bottle, but it all comes together on Day 2 and is absolutely singing.

Surprised at prominent oak notes, I thought this was always fermented in steel and then into old large botti?

Yep. Perhaps they were breaking in replacement botti...

Though I have had it twice now, and no oak prominence at all.

Well if there isn't any oak, then it's probably just my inability to describe what I am tasting. I just recall fairly strong vanilla notes and gripping tannin, which I generally associate with oak. I will certainly defer to others with more experience.

The second day whatever I am tasting is completely gone or integrated.

Gripping tannin is textbook Nebbiolo

The vanilla is odd though. Never noted that in a Produttori wine.

I don´t decant, as I drink wines over 2-3 days.
I whole-heartedly agree, nothing like watching a Nebbiolo come to life over the course of a couple of days. Also, I'm not really happy with the results of decanting (such as: leaving the wine in the decanter and not just using it to remove sediment) Nebbiolo.

I swore I’d keep my hands off these after opening a bottle of the 2015 about a year ago - just way too closed and tannic. But it was impossible to resist all the enablement here.

All the pieces are there but very closed and tannic over 5 hours. I stuck a Repour in it and came back the next day. The Repour did its job because it took all day (8 more hours) to open up. Destined for greatness, I’m glad I bought a case, but the rest are going to sleep for a decade or more.

Just found a TN on a German wine-board from last november and no mention of oak and certainly not vanilla. They also praised the quality and QPR, in Germany around 30 Euro.

93/100
When day comes we step out of the shade,
aflame and unafraid
The new dawn blooms as we free it
For there is always light,
if only we’re brave enough to see it
If only we’re brave enough to be it

Haven’t seen any 2016 Riservas, don’t think they’re released yet.

Martin, I agree that it's a great wine and a great QPR. I only posted to say that my bottles have taken rather significant time to reach that point, as opposed to being great from the first sip.

I have willing conceded that I struggle describing tasting notes. I am new here and relatively new to drinking wine. It's probably a combination of tobacco, tea, clove, anise, which are all regularly noted on cellar tracker and elsewhere, that my nose/palate is oversimplifying to vanilla and oak. Whatever it is, I agree that is comes into perfect balance by day two.

I hope we both get to enjoy several more bottles as I think this is going to be stunning with age. [cheers.gif]

I'm considering buying a few bottles to drink, but what do people think about the price evolution of this bottle over time?

If you’re contemplating buying now vs. in a year or so, I doubt there will be much change unless someone rates it 98-100 points, but most critics have already weighed in. Longer-term, as they increase in age and scarcity, retail prices on Wine Searcher seem to jump at ~30 years.

That's good to know. It's interesting how the price will be higher at very old age (due to scarcity) than it will be at peak drinking time (say around 10 years).

Per Wine Spectator: 7,500 cases imported.

How many cases have WBers bought? ;-)
