Champagne to cellar

What have people been cellaring for the long haul from current releases?

For me: Krug 164 (good prices on mags still, not so much for 750s), 08 Cristal, 08 Dom

Haven’t really set aside much else.

Agree on Krug 164. Have stocked up on mags.

Cellar everything. Amazing how good Bolly Special Cuvée can be with a few years of age.

This. Many NV with 5-7 years are great. I’m thinking H. Billiot rose & white, Laurent Perrier Grand Siecle, Pierre Peters and many more. Extended aging? I have 2 bots of 1996 Salon I’m hoping will pay off.

Reminds me I’ve got too much aged and drinkable champs sitting in the cellar. Good problem to have but I want a more diverse selection of juices. Got to make some room…

I put a sixer of Clouet 1911 down to check back in a few years. Thought it could use some development time to round out a bit.

I haven’t bought a single bottle of Dom since 96, but I still kick myself that a) I didn’t go deep when it was sub $100 and b) what I did buy was gone way too quickly. So I bought a 12 pack of that for the cellar as well.

Krug 164 as well, but I only bought 1/2 bottles (24). The price was so good ~$60 that it will allow us to check in on development on a regular basis though.

The vintage becomes not as significant as 20+ years. Having said that the 08 Dom and Cristal are two of the best young Champagnes of my life. I am cellaring the 02, 06 and 08 tete de cuvees.

We like aged rose and have had some great bottles of aged Billecart and others, so I put down a variety of those including B-S, Aubry, Vilmart, etc. I buy a few Grande Marques as well, typically Veuve LGD, especially our wedding year of 08. I dont buy Krug or Dom though, as the house preferences run other ways.

It seems to me that Dom release price has had about the lowest inflation of any great wine. 1990 Dom sold for around the same price as 1990 First Growth Bordeaux (my Dom, Ch. Margaux and Ch. Cheval Blanc were all marked $79.99 from release). Now a great 2008 Dom is $150-180 and the others are over $500. Great Champagne is a bargain as wine pricing goes.

what’s the 164 mag going for these days?

400 I’ve found lately. They were 325 last Black Friday

Oh 325 wow.

Yeah, hdh on Black Friday or cyber Monday; can’t remember. They wanted like 200 to ship it to PA so I put it in my luggage.

good price for shipping a pallet.
