You’re being evacuated from your home, what wine do you grab?

#1 Post by Brian Tuite » October 27th, 2019, 6:51 am

I literally had that thought pop in my head last night as I was hopping in my truck to leave. Ran in the garage, opened the cellar and grabbed the first thing I saw:
2015 Becklyn Missouri Hopper

What would be the first thing you see and grab (1 bottle) ?

A lone bottle of 2012 Greer I bought to celebrate when our daughter graduates from high school in a few years. The road has been pretty rough for her the past couple years and we will celebrate that day in a big way, when it comes.

If I could grab two, the second would be a 2004 Monprivato I bought on release and have been holding for my dad’s 75th birthday ( 4 more years).

2000 Pegau or any vintage MacDonal. Since all the MacDonalds are still in the three pack boxes, would that count as one?

I have two hands. Should be able to get two bottles.

Not sure what to grab - 1988 Mugnier Musigny, 2001 Comte Vogue Musigny, 2001 Drouhin Romanee St. Vivant? Or, one of my many Truchots. Probably would grab 1999 Truchot Clos de la Roche. Others could be replaced. I have insurance.

1947 Coche-Vincent Meursault, made by JF Coche's grandfather, which is truly irreplaceable. If I'm allowed two hands, my 1959 La Tâche, which is unaffordable.

We packed the car up last night just in case, mostly pictures, etc... No wines, though I did think about it for a quick second.

+1. I chose Brett Favre for this reason - whatever room I have in my car and time I have to do it is going to be to gather irreplaceable things - photos, computers/hard drives, etc. While I don't have any irreplaceable wines, even if I did, I don't really believe they're totally irreplaceable, because otherwise I couldn't drink them!

If you have already planned and packed, and have a place to stay, that's one thing.
Otherwise, if you are thinking about what wine to bring, you are wasting the time that you need for things more important.

Where to stay is a big deal - I had to go 60 miles to find a hotel last year. Even LAX airport hotels were all sold out.
I had a couple of hours, still forgot my passport.
Extra credit cards, Rx, passport, photo albums, etc. all more important. Probably would have brought art instead of wine.

I suppose if I was staying with friends, it might be a nice thing to grab. But otherwise, not worth even thinking about. Dujac in water glasses in a hotel room doesn't sound great, scotch in the hotel bar was better.

To be very clear we had advance warning of an impending evacuation so we had everything important packed up. When the mandatory order came we packed up the wife’s car and the animals and she left. I stayed, took a shower and got my truck ready. I then I washed the dinner dishes and waited for the power to go out before turning on the generator and leaving. As I was leaving I grabbed one bottle just to have something to drink when I got to my destination. No real thought went into the selection I just grabbed the first bottle I saw.

This is a simple flawed poll. No need to get sanctimonious.

What would be the first thing within reach in your cellar?

Probably a couple small bottles of sweet wine that I can't get here.

I heard about how close it was on the news yesterday. Here's hoping you guys are safe and sound and when you get back, everything is intact and undamaged.

Oh yeah, I'd probably grab some dog food! Those guys are going to get hungry!

Best of luck Brian!!

Your post is why I eliminated some of the bigger names. My sense is that, since he does not make wine anymore, my Truchot would be the hardest wine to replace.

Most of my wine is stored off site, but I have a bottle of 1961 Latour which I put aside to share with a friend in a couple of weeks. Assuming the fire comes after that, as much old Cognac as I can carry.

Is it possible to convert a “tiny home” into a cellar so it can be towed in case of emergency evacuation? Random thought while reading the thread. Hope everyone is safe.

This. Was actually just thinking this morning I need to do a better job of collecting high priority items into a couple of boxes that are easily accessible if we ever had to get out quick.

But in the spirit of Brian’s fun question, my one irreplaceable bottle is a 1937 Warre’s Colheita. But it’s not at home, it’s in a locker facility.

I would grab a 2012 GTS Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes grown on Tom Seaver’s (great baseball pitcher , primarily for the New York Mets) Diamond Mountain property in Napa County. I’ve bought a few vintages over the years and this is the only one I have left . Hoping to drink it when the Mets win a World Series. Which means I probably will never drink it . Or I will be able to put it on salad with some oil .

I would take many other things before wine, but the question was which wine. I would grab my wat h collection before wine, the replacement value is more. But wine is the question.

Since I have insurance and wine can be replaced, probably something easy to drink while waiting to return...

If it was to save a special bottle, I'd grab the 2004 Monfortino.

Re: You’re being evacuated from your home, what wine do you grab?

We have so few wines at the house, half of which are shiners or undrinkables that I'd grab my unopened bottle of Dewars knowing I'll be evacuating to the shop. Next, rent a refrigerated 24 foot box truck and start loading it at the shop until I'm forced to evacuate there, (which isn't very likely.) The truck will be loaded by order of cost, highest to lowest. Anybody assisting will have access to all the daily drinkers, (under $30) and free run of the walk-in humidor. My version of the Kobayashi Maru test.

Lighten up, everyone.

Lighten up, Francis.

The first person to get the quote, without googling it, gets a free bottle of wine from me.

On your honor not not googling it.
Sgt Hulka, to Psycho, in Stripes. 100% from memory. Feel free to quiz me on the movie in person.

[No need for the bottle, but it’s a nice offer.]

Boy your all’s reading comprehension sucks. If you reach into your cellar in the dark what would be the first bottle your hand touches not what bottle is your most prized.

And David Baum, we packed all of our essentials long before we left. Pictures, important documents, animals, everything else is replaceable. On the way out I grabbed a bottle of wine out of the cellar in the dark. I opened the door and pulled the first bottle my hand touched.

Opened it tonight and it was corked! [swearing.gif]
