TN: 2010 Francois Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts

  • 2010 Francois Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru (9/10/2019)
Last of 3 bottles, first tried in 2013 and noted some really angry acidic energy that needed calming. Next years bottle still in need of calming. SO…5 years later…there is plenty of richness of ripe yellow pitted fruits…full bodied, some honey and almond butter with age…good dose of vanilla oak spice that works well with the richness…wonderful savory crushed sea shell minerality, subtle smoke, sea salted caramel sweetness. The intense acidity has integrated even more so, but is STILL a force in this wine! Creates nice freshness and energy…but still a little sharp and bitter at times. The ingredients are all there…it is really tasty as hell…just needs another 5 or so years to get that acid to play nicely. Too bad this is my last stop…would love to see how this one plays out. Have you had a chance yet to start learning the stylistic differences between Francois & Jacques?

Or between them & their father?

I always seem to get…

Louis Carillon - total pureness.
Francois Carillon - more heavy handed.
Jacques Carillon - bright and energized.

Carillon quality is evident in all.

Nice note Brian - I have the Jacques version, which is nearly always exceptionally good. The Francois wines don’t make it over here afaik. Come over to NZ sometime and we’ll do a comparison or vertical !

Second day the acidity has integrated even more…still some spice kick and a little bitters…but all in all there is finally some harmony! Lot of exotics and spice in this big wine…but not heavy at all.
