A wine catalog from 1996

Some of you may have heard of Barry Silver. He ended up in prison for his Ponzi scheme with 2000 futures. However, this catalog came from long before that, courtesy of my contractor who knew I was interested in wine. Some really interesting pricing. Unlike today and the plethora of critics, only two publications mentioned were WA and WS. WS had a starring role as they featured many of their top 100 wines.

Here is a smattering.
Starting off with non vintage Champagne, prices seem to have gone up around 50%.
Most were in the $25 range. Vintage Champagnes such as DP and Comtes 1985 were $80, while Pol Roger was $99, Cristal 1985 was $107. Sadly no Krug listed.

California pricing was weak,a magnum of Harlan 1991 was $150, Togni 1993 was $34.99. Berlnger knights 1993 was $15, and La Jota was $55 also 1993.

Bordeaux pricing seemed fair. 1990 Latour was $84 (wine of the year WS), Lafite 1990;was $67. Louviere 1990 was $24. Some older wines: Mouton 1982 was $300, the 1986 $200. Petrus 1985 was $300, Latour 1982 was $250.

Lots of Leroy 1991.
RSV and Richebourg $218. VR Beaumonts $85, and the Latriciere $149.

I have saved the best for last
Rhone.
Both Clape and Verset Cornas 1991 were $26. 15% discount for three cases for the Rhône’s only.

Coronas are about a buck apiece now, Mark.

Damn spell check, fixed.

is it too late to order?

I think he has been released on parole; you can try.

1990 vintage of the century. Best vintage since 89!

I attended a Chicago wine company auction in late 94 or early 95 where the 1991 Leroy Musigny went for $300 or $320. I forget the exact price.
