If it makes you feel better, I drove past The Prisoner winery yesterday and forgot to flip them off or break my empties on their driveway.

I guess I’m going soft.

I, for instance, have had more than one Cambie wine get past me at large tastings. I don't remember their names, though, no doubt as a matter of defense mechanisms exerting themselves.
Plausible deniability.

This is a safe space, right? No (real) names (come on, Owlfert?), no judgement? Okay then...

I still really enjoy 1995-2000 Monbousquet. I am not sure I think of them as wine per se, they’re more like a delicious and surprisingly complex/exotic daiquiri. But fun to drink.
Who said anything about no judgement? Still, perhaps you are more sinned against than sinning. I saw the best palates if my generation ruined by...
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Barrels of new oak on fire off the shoulder of Michel Rolland. I watched reverse osmosis filters glitter in the dark near Chateau Pavie. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time for my palate to die.

I'll happily admit that I really dig a lot of Priorat and that's turned into my go to when I want a bigger wine. It may not be full on AWFE, but it's a region that seems to be thrown into the purple drank category when that isn't the case for a lot of wines IMO

Folks, there is a solution to still owning certain monstrosities acquired in our less considered youth: charity auctions.

Last year one got $1,000 for my 3L of 2003 Bellevue Mondotte. The reviews said it all: mocha, caramel, nougat. I hope the buyer (donor) likes it. A win/win/win.
Reminds me of a confession: I bought and consumed a 2003 Bellevue Mondotte. I’n my defense, back in 2005, I had been out of the wine game for 5-6 years, and had no clue what had happened to Parker’s palate and that once wonderful region called St Emilion. That wine was horrid.

Here is a confession for you: I really liked the ‘03 Bellevue Mondotte a few years ago and I’ve bought more of various vintages since then. I opened a bottle of the ‘03 bottle last night and could barely swallow it. I thought my palate was still very “open-minded” with respect to modern vs traditional styles, but perhaps that has changed a lot since then. Or maybe the oaky mess will in come together in 20 years!

Last year I visited DC to go to a good friend's Halloween party (he posts here on occasion). To celebrate, he popped a bottle of 2009 Pavie and told me it was a Robert Owlfert wine. When I explained that Bobby hates on Pavie, he said without a trace of irony, "yeah, but if you read his tasting notes, you'd see he secretly likes big, oaky wines."

True story.

This Napa trip confirms his inclinations...brilliant slueth work from your buddy [pwn.gif]

Hell, I drink with Bobby yet was never enlightened to his true deep dark desires...wait, I take that back, I am very aware of his deep dark desires, just not when it came to wine.

Same.

When we were in SB last year we visited Sanguis and though it was definitely purp we liked it and brought some home. We cracked one a while ago with a friend who also leans AFWE and we all sort of agreed that yes it was huge but also shockingly tasty and complex.
To our surprise, we also stopped in at Caymus a few years back to pick my dad up some oaky bullshit chardonnay and had a very nice time and left with some wine for ourselves [oops.gif]

I drink and enjoy wines that the AFWE would condemn, but I see absolutely no reason to make Alfert feel better so I am not going to "confess" anything.

I chugged a bottle of 2016 Ridge Merlot. 13.4% but I just soaked in all the oak.

Also, I love Maybach. Is that Anti-AFWE?

Isn't being on the SQN list a wise financial decision? Drinking the wine, however, for me at least is a different matter.

Post-Parker, don’t know how exquisite a financial decision it remains. Tons and tons sitting on the auction market. Soft. Not 2000’s Shiraz soft, but soft.

I drink and enjoy wines that the AFWE would condemn, but I see absolutely no reason to make Alfert feel better so I am not going to "confess" anything.
I know, but do it for Corey’s sake. Just think what he’s going through.
Ripe fruit isn't necessarily a flaw.

The truth is, Robert is all things to all people. I mean, when we hang out we drink Riesling and Burgundy in solo cups. For Marc, he has a built to scale Loire outhouse façade as the entrance to his cellar. Its stinky and screechy in there. Then, he goes to Cali on an AFWE buying spree, guised as a "save the environment" Tesla tour. We all know he burned all of that juice hitting Rollo stop after Rollo stop. When he and Corey get together... OK I don't even want to know what happens there. With Fu its DRC Montrachet... or better, with gourmet chicken wings and those pretty little fish eggs. I hear he has been talking old cars and Pavie while rubbing elbows with Leve! Alfert and Levenberg hang out in old Baroque Brothels drinking Francois Audouze Bordeaux. Last time I saw Frank Murray III and Robert together, they were drinking zero dosage Champagne and ice cream floats at a sporting event. I even heard a report that Mollen and Alfert were spotted at a smoke filled old blues bar pre trialing their stories on how to explain away their predisposition toward AFWE.
So shines a good deed in a weary world!

I’m either a whore or a politician. Still trying to figure it out. Since lawyers are called reptiles, perhaps Chameleon is more apropos. I only care that I look good.

I was going to try to superimpose your mug on a Chameleon body, but I don't know how.

After reading my post, I realize that I am pretty blessed to have made so many friends through WB. I haven't met everyone in that paragraph, but I have met and hung with most of them! I think almost always with you but for a couple of Berns visits.

As part of the ongoing effort to help Robert feel better about his chameleon-like palate, I plan to drink my one remaining bottle of the 1999 Monbousquet tonight. I approach it with a little trepidation as I see that it's been 5-6 years since my last Monbo. Never fear, I will take one for the team no matter the personal cost!
