2003 Dunn Napa

Opened tonight to pair with tenderloin. One of the most mature Dunn’s I have ever opened. Not tasting over the hill just full resolves. Fruit and tannin have all faded to the back and getting a lot of earthy Bordeaux notes like graphite, cigar box, etc. very dark fruits. Still a big wine

I liked this a lot, but tasting more mature than the Dunn’s I have had from the 90s ( but those were he HM)

2003 was notoriously hot for the sake of being hot, not in the good phenolic ripeness hot to close harvest.

Not surprised as most 2003s matured rather quickly.

That makes sense here. Had a tiny bit of stewed fruit but I wouldn’t have noticed until your comment

I found 2003, much like 1997 matured early and started to turn to brown fruits from red and blacks.

Mountains definitely outperformed the valley floor.

The last 2003 Howell Mountain we opened needed more cellar time. I think Kriss is spot on.

Great discussion, one of my favorite producers, so I always look forward to notes like these!

How is 2007 doing?
