Not to rain on anyone's parade but getting a couple dozen shipping boxes grosses me out. A couple years back I received about that many in a week during the fall shipping window and looking at all the boxes and inserts made me feel shitty. Luckily, I have a local friend who is an importer and can recycle the boxes to send out samples to his customers but I still felt icky about it.

In addition to the shipping boxes, there are bottles with the corks half soaked and other issues. If I had bought them locally, I'd take them back, but there generally isn't that kind of recourse with many of these online stores. I also steer clear from grey market sources because of highly variable results.

Depending on where you live, do you really need to buy from all over the country? If you supported a good local store, you might be surprised at what you could be able to do. I live in NC and have just accepted that I can't get everything and to mostly source from local stores. I'm not perfect, I do participate in HDH auctions and sometimes can't resist the charms of bottles from Chambers or a couple others I have a long relationship with.

I also sort of like the idea of having a cellar that is "look what I was able to put together in NC". As I said, if you develop a good local relationship you might be surprised at what they are able to find. Importers have to allocate most wines to all markets, not just the coasts. I'm also reminded of a dinner at a longtime ITBers house. He worked in wholesale for several companies across 30 years. He loved wine, but wasn't obsessive. His cellar was full of bottles that he picked up along the way from the places he worked. I found the unexpected and organic nature of it really cool and that's what I'm trying to do now.
If it's domestic, I buy straight from the winery (which is shipped)--and even if the winery is rarely available in my home state--the wines I get I have never seen at local retail (Bedrock being a prime example). I'd say 80% of my wine comes from Envoyer and Fass Selections--which also largely offers wines not distributed in my local market. The rest of mine come from auction.

I used to have a LOT, until I started getting help for my addiction. Now, just a handful and I am much happier.

36 and some of these are futures, like 2017 Burgs. Really trying to cut purchases.

I had bought a few bottles of Clerget's wines a couple of years ago and tried one. Then, I visited there last summer and tasted his 2017s from barrel. After that, I tasted his 2016s in March at the Paulee Grand Tasting. So, the answer to your question probably is best described as in part.

Question? How do you know if you've received everything you ordered? Or even the correct number of bottles, wine, vintages, etc. ? There have been a few occasions where if I hadn't follow up with retailers, I'm not sure I would have ever gotten my wine. Once, I eventually got a refund.
Cheers!

Thanks, was curious. I was at a dinner with someone from his importer who suggested Clerget as a (so far) not overpriced Volnay producer, so I was very curious to try his 16s at the Paulee tasting this year. I liked his Caillerets quite a bit, but didn't like the other two Volnays that he poured as much.

Very nice that you got to visit.

keep your receipts. Only deal with people you trust. I currently have wines pending from only two retailers, both of which I have a long history with.

I track my wine in VinoCell. I've had two shipments this summer that have been incorrect. Only time I've ever had wine shipped incorrectly and it was on back to back shipments. I contacted the winery and they made it right although I opted to keep their mistakes and ended up buying those as extras with a discount.

Amazon syndrome. Anyway, while I don't like the packaging waste, when I see my neighbors' amazon boxes piling up (ours as well) it seems relatively less bad.

I don't order online gratuitously - it's all stuff on allocation from winery or stuff that's hard to source locally (which I realize doesn't really answer your point of buying locally whatever it may be).

Anyway,

I have email receipts for everything I buy. I will probably check most of it when it arrives. I do only buy from 4 different retailers at this point, so I have a record with them too.

Even reputable and good hearted, trustworthy retailers make mistakes. I have been overcharged or duplicate charged (accidentally) by board favorite retailers. I have also had incorrect bottles shipped. A phone call or email is all it takes to fix this with a great seller, but not having a system in place for your pending inventory or even verifying that the correct bottles were sent seems foolhardy to me.

Josh- all good points. Good news is the majority are Bordeaux futures which will give me time to make big dents on the cellar (eg hide from my wife).

I don’t know how to keep off of lists but I am filled with so much wine ADD or maybe a better descriptor is wine Porn (can you say that here) as it is a compulsion. Maybe we should start therapy for wine buying addicts?

Between Schrader, Vice Versa, Alpha Omega, Myriad, Carter, Paul Hobbs, Rivers-Marie, Bevan, Saxum, and Winebid I’m sitting at 59 bottles. With the third round of Myriad coming up, a few more on Winebid I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on, and the many other offers that are sure to come up soon, the bottle count will go up before I start rounding up deliveries this fall.

I shared this thread with the wife. Somehow she wasn’t convinced to let me buy more based solely on the fact that some people have more pending than our whole cellar. Either we don’t buy enough or we drink too fast, regardless I shall do my part to lighten our bank account!
I opened this thread hoping to use it as ammo in the same discussion. so far I am not disappointed (37 bottles including a few futures here)

Rough guess, at about 64. This is spread out between: Carlisle, Bedrock, Myriad, Quivet, Becklyn, Rivers-Marie, and Carter. October will be a busy (and fun) month!

Ok, now I’m up to 168
It will be a lot more than that when your wife gets back from Napa and joins a number of wine clubs. [wow.gif]

No worries, I just knocked down another case. Some 2016 Bordeaux. I know, I said I wouldn’t, but I did.

My wife busted me on the prior case from UK. Not sure why my business card called her for fraud detection. Hmm...
